History of Nutella
The history of Nutella is a story of innovation and adaptation, with roots in a place famous for hazelnuts. Here's a timeline of its key events:
- 1946: Pietro Ferrero, an Italian baker from Alba, Italy (a region known for hazelnut production), invents a solution to wartime chocolate shortages and creates “Gianduja,” a paste made from hazelnuts, cocoa, and sugar. This early version of Nutella was sold in solid blocks like a loaf.
- 1951: The recipe evolves into “Supercrema gianduja,” a creamier, spreadable version. The Ferrero company introduced a creamier, spreadable version of the original paste called Supercrema gianduja.
- 1963: Michele Ferrero, Pietro's son, takes the helm and revamps Supercrema gianduja for a wider European market. He refines the recipe and renames it “Nutella.”
- April 20, 1964: The first jar of Nutella rolls off the production line in Alba. It's an immediate success and continues to be a beloved breakfast and snack spread around the world.
