How social media launched a new career for me

I spent years in marketing and communications. It just seemed to be the natural progression that my life had taken. I had always been a writer. In fact, I wrote my first novel at the age of 8. I say novel but it was really a journal my mother gave me that I used to write an entire story in. I loved writing that much and she could barely keep me supplied with new journals.

I wrote all through school including high school and college. Words never seemed to fail me. I had a good, solid career and I enjoyed it.

Everything changed when I had my first child. My son was born six weeks early and spent weeks in the NICU as a 4 pound newborn. Something changed in me the day that I first left that hospital without my son. I knew that I could never be a full time out of the home working parent again. I went back to work 3 months later, part time and two months after that, I quit my job completely because I wanted to work from home.

A few weeks at home and I discovered social media. Social media helped me to feel connected to the outside world even though I was at home. I got to interact with other adults about a variety of topics that interested me. If I didn't like that conversation, I moved on. Conversely, when I loved the conversation, I made some really great contacts. I met people that I am still in touch with today.

Social media completely changed my life. Once I figured out the things that I liked most, I jumped in and started a company. Then I started a blog. Today, I employ my husband (he works with me full time) and kids plus three other people. My family and I have never been happier.

One of the first places that I joined after starting my blog was the SITS group. They just got me and made it so easy to connect with other bloggers/social media people. This was and still is my tribe. I found people who 100% understand what I do because they also do it. I loved discovering new bloggers and working with some of my favorite bloggers.

When SITS combined with Sway group, I immediately joined and loved how easy it is to be a part of their network. My readers really respond to my sponsored content and I appreciate the work that I get from them. Sway has helped me earn an income to support my family and to be able to follow our dreams of traveling.

It's been five years of working with Sway and I have to say that they are one of the most consistent blogger and social media networks that I work with. I love their professionalism and the people. The people make a huge difference. I feel more connected to sway

  1. I love that social media has allowed us careers has helped both me and wife be work from home parents!! Love companies like Sway that work with use!

  2. This is so great! I’d really like to make social media my career-it’s something I’ve wanted to get into for a while. I really want my blog to be my main source of income, but unless I can get it to rival what I make at my day job (which is unlikely any time soon) I can’t quit my day job. I’d just like to find a day job that lets me work with their social media and/or blog in the meantime.

  3. I haven’t heard of either of these companies before but I have seen the badges before on other blogs. I’m going to have to look into this a little closer, time to find my tribe!

  4. I have heard of the Sits Group, but I haven’t looked much into it. Sway is new to me. This is a fabulous giveaway.

  5. It has definitely launched a new career for me, as well. But there are also some scary pratfalls, too!

  6. I have enjoyed working with The SITS girls and Sway for a few years now. It’s wonderful they are celebrating 5 years.

  7. Blogging is hard work. I used to have a life in the corporate world but it was just too stressful for me. I was losing time I should spend with family. Without batting an eyelash, I turned by back on it and started focusing on earning my keep through my writing. So far, so good!

  16. The initial draw for me to social media was keeping connected with my family that lives out of state. It’s allowed us to have a daily exchange. But it has morphed into so much more, allowing me to spend time with my kids as I can work from home.

  17. What I love about social media is that it is able to connect people all around the world. I have been with Sway Group for a while now and they are a great network. Too bad I missed the twiiter party, that was a great giveaway.

  18. Seeing your background, this does look like a good transition for you!
I also really enjoy this field – it definitely keeps me busy.

  21. Social Media and the internet have really changed the world we live in. When I became a stay-at-home mom, I had almost no adult contact. We lived way out in the country, every person I wanted to call was long distance and there was no internet. I would have been so grateful to have had an opportunity like the one you shared. Congratulations on being able to enjoy doing what you love and spend lots of time with your family!

  22. I’ve been blessed to do campaigns through them, and have had only positive experiences! Glad you were able to find something you love and enjoy doing!

  27. I am journal addict also! LOL

I have been in the mass media for a long time! In the 90’s Wired Magazine named me ‘The Godmother of Social Media’ which I had no idea until my clients all called me and asked if I had the seen issue yet! LOL

I still contribute to a few Magazines, but I have done Newspapers and Television News Writing too. I have also been a Special Ed Teacher, Sales Manager and still do Life/Career Coaching in addition to being a Pro Blogger.

Social Media is constantly evolving which is why I personally find it to be an exciting area to pursue, I love hosting Twitter Parties! 🙂
