I am an early adopter. This means that when new tech gadgets come out, I have to have them. My husband is the exact same way. I am really embarrassed to say that I honestly have no idea of how many gadgets we own.

A few years, I had just gotten a new cellphone when I went grocery shopping. I probably stepped away from purse for just a second but in that moment someone grabbed my cellphone and stole it. It was three days old.

Did you know that more than $5 billion worth of cellphones are lost or stolen annually?*  That is right! Iconic devices such as the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series are 35 percent more likely to be lost or stolen than other smartphones.

Did you also know that the percentage of claims filed for lost or stolen cellphones increases in November, December and January?* That does not surprise me at all. People are out a lot more and doing way more shopping during theses three months which gives thieves more of an opportunity to steal devices.

I didn't have protection for my new phone but I should have had it. I didn't think that I needed to protect my device but we all do. You need to protect your device. You need Asurion.

My information and pictures on my smartphone cannot be replaced. A quick look right now tells me that I have over 2000 pictures alone on my iPhone. Most are of my children. I would hate to lose these pictures.

The risk of theft increases during the holidays, and customers need to consider a more comprehensive approach to protecting smartphones and the valuable information on them. The holidays were when my phone was taken and I only stepped away for a moment.

Asurion products offer comprehensive protection safeguarding from loss, theft, damage and malfunction. Asurion customers have access to the latest technology including location based services helping you find a missing device, remotely locking it and even erasing the data should a  device land in the wrong hands.

Asurion asked consumers about the ways in which they use their smartphones, the content they keep on those devices and the precautions they take to protect their data.  Among the findings:

  • 76% use their smartphone to take photos
  • 62% send and receive email
  • 54% access social media
  • 43% shop
  • 40% bank
