Sleep Easy Have a Good Rest

As a mother of three children, and three dogs and a business owner, stress and lack of sleep seem to be things that happen regularly. I am always trying to manage my stress and one of the things I do for my stress is to get a good night's sleep. I always try to get a good night's sleep but that doesn't work out for me for some reason. My wellness journey began around 5 years ago when I started to lose weight. Over three years, I lost 170 pounds and changed my life. We hope that this Sleep Easy Have a Good Rest post inspires you.

I had a lot of bad habits to break but the most pressing issue was sleep. My sleeping habits had gotten messed up and I knew that I needed to fix that because I needed to get a good night's sleep. Lack of sleep caused stress. To relieve stress and achieve optimal sleep, I use a combination of things to make certain I keep my health a top priority. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, stressed out, or lacking in sleep, I use the tips below to bring a bit more balance to my life.

Drink lots of water.

Did you know that 60% of the human adult body is water? Many of us do not get enough water into our daily lives and this causes dehydration. Dehydration leads to stress, disturbs sleep and so many other things.

Set a sleep schedule.

Setting a sleep schedule can be very important. The CDC recommends getting 7 hours of sleep each night, so having designated bedtimes and wake-up times can be very helpful in both reducing stress and feeling well rested. Cleveland Clinic researchers shared that fluctuating amounts of sleep and irregular bedtimes and wake-up times put people at an increased risk for:

  • obesity
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • high blood sugar
  • and other health problems.

“Keeping a regular sleep schedule—even on weekends—maintains the timing of the body's internal clock and can help you fall asleep and wake up more easily.” ~ Get Sleep from Harvard

Do Women Need More Sleep Than Men?

Turn off electronics 30 minutes before bed.

This is a tough one for me but I have been working hard to ditch the electronics at least 30 minutes before I go to bed. I leave them in the kitchen charging rather than on my nightstand which makes it too easy to check emails or social media. That blue light can affect my sleeping habits which also means when I am too tired, I get stressed.

Electronic back-lit devices like cell phones, tablets, readers, fluorescent & LED lights and computers emit short-wavelength enriched (blue) light which reduces or delays natural production of melatonin and decreases feelings of sleepiness. Blue light can also reduce the amount of time you spend in slow-wave and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, two stages of the sleep cycle that are vital for cognitive functioning. ~ SleepFoundation.org

Walk it out.

Feeling stressed? Can't sleep? Walking releases brain chemicals called endorphins which stimulate relaxation and improve our mood. Whenever I get stressed out, upset, angry, annoyed, or anything, I head outside to take a walk around our neighborhood. A lot of times one of the kids will walk along with me. There pretty much isn't any problem I can't solve with a nice long walk.

“…being exposed to natural light by walking outside in the morning helps entrain a strong circadian rhythm, which promotes healthy sleep. Exercise is also associated with stress reduction and physical well-being, both of which could be pathways to sleeping better.” ~ Psychology Today
