Thank you to Upromise by Sallie Mae for sponsoring this post! As always, all opinions are my own.
Saving for college is something that is almost always on my mind. After having our third child, it really became a concern. I want all of my kids to be able to go to college if they want and I don’t want them to have to struggle or juggle multiple jobs while they are doing it.
When I became pregnant with my first child many years ago, I signed up for Upromise by Sallie Mae. I knew that I could save money for college for my kids (and even myself if I wanted to) all with the purchases that I make every day. I never shop online without going through Upromise and to date, we have several thousand dollars saved for the kids.
Upromise is a rewards program where shoppers can earn cash back for college with everyday purchases. It is free to join and to date, Upromise members have collectively earned more than $900 million and counting, helping families contribute to college tuition, expenses and loans. Members can allocate their cash back earnings in several ways to help save, plan and pay for college. By simply starting your online shopping at Upromise.com at hundreds of online retail partners such as Target, Apple, Best Buy, Macy’s or Old Navy, families can earn 5% back for college on eligible purchases. Upromise members can earn up to 5% cash back just by shopping with Upromise partners —including more than 850+ online stores and 10,000+ restaurants, grocery and drugstores. Popular online retail partners include Macys.com, Staples.com, Groupon and more.
In addition to saving 5% when shopping online, users can earn an additional 5% when shopping online with the Upromise MasterCard, totaling 10% cash back for college. Money earned through Upromise can be put in an eligible 529 college savings plan, put towards eligible student loans, deposited in a Sallie Mae savings account such as Upromise GoalSaver.
When earning cashback through Upromise, be sure to go through Upromise.com to get to your favorite sites, or download the RewardU toolbar, so your account is credited.

I set up accounts for my boys when they were born. I want to do all I can to help.
I use UPromise! It is a nice little bit off what you owe on student loans. The more you shop, the more you save off of your loans.
Participating in a program like that is very important for parents, as many neglect saving for college and then when the time comes either them or their child ends up taking out student loans.
I will try to earn money anyway I can for college! It is SO expensive to go to college right now I can’t imagine what it will be when my son gets there.
College is so ridiculously expensive – this idea is so fantastic for saving money 🙂
This sounds so helpful! It will help a lot with all the shopping you have to do during college.
This sounds like a really good idea! I need to set this up for my daughter!
I love any tool I can get my hands on that will help me save money. You never know when you might need the extra cash!
This looks like a great program to set up for your kids!! I hope something like this is around when I have kids one day!!
This is the first time I heard about U Promise and it sounds like a really great program to save up for your child’s college education. I wish there was something like that here.
I love UPromise! I want to make sure to help my kids in any way that I can and this is perfect!
Thanks for the reminder, I have forgotten all about the Upromise. I should have used it when I shopped online.
I have to look into this and get something set up for my kids – every little bit does help and it is nice to know that there are good tools to help parents figure out this college expense thing.
Love Upromise, and the program. It’s such a great way to get those funds started and growing.
I need to look into this. my husbands student loans are killing us!
Upromise sounds like a great rewards program. I would have loved to use this to save for my kids tuition. I will have to share this with other parents i know.
College is so expensive. We definitely plan on paying for both of our girls to go to College. I’d hate to watch them struggle financially.
This is so awesome. It’s the first time I’m hearing about it and I’m sold… Wish we could get this in my country.
Omg Upromise sounds great! This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this so I will defiantly be checking it out 🙂
I am a member of a few rewards programs and had enjoyed rewards already. I had enjoyed cash backs too and continue to enjoy it. I am going to check this out for sure.
Sounds like a great program to me!! You get to shop AND earn cash back? It’s almost inconceivable!! 😉
this is way better than owing them after the fact! thanks for the info!
I’ve had an Upromise account for the past maybe 15 years. I signed up when I lived in NY and my daughter started Kindergarten and have never regretted it.
UPromise sounds like a program I need to check. My kids’ future is very important for me and I saving for college is in my list, always. I need to check UPromise further!
Ineed to use upromise. I just need to add my debit card.
I didn’t realize Upromise was still around. So glad to hear that it is still going on.
I completely forgot I was a upromise member. Thanks for reminding me of my benefits!
How smart to have a credit card that allows you to earn cashback and savings towards an education! Gotta love Sallie Mae.
oh boy. sallie mae. the death of me. sometimes i wish i didnt go to college. i will die paying back all my student loans. i wish i wouldve been smarter about it all way back when.
I’m so glad I read this, I’ve heard about this program for year. I had no idea what is was and how it worked. Thanks for sharing.
This is such a great resource, we have TOPS, were hoping that and scholarships will take care of the bulk of the cost but this is always great to fall back on.
What better than a rewards program that can give your child the gift of an education?
That is wonderful! The expense of college is ridiculous, but thankfully these programs exist.
Saving for college tuition is so scary. This makes it a lot less intimidating and so smart!
I have never heard of Upromise before! Thanks so much for sharing this, I love learning about new programs!
Oh, I can’t wait to share this with my husband. What a great way for us to help our boys plan for their future!
This is a great resource for parents! I have been involved with them for a wile, but have not checked my cash savings lately. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂
