LIFE OF THE PARTY movie set visit with Melissa McCarthy

Back in 2016 I had the opportunity to do a set visit here in Georgia for the new movie LIFE OF THE PARTY which will be out in theaters on May 11, 2018. We visited a set on a beautiful, old Georgia plantation where they were filming outside of Atlanta. The scene they were filming on that day was one where Melissa and her husband dropping their daughter off for college. It was touching yet funny because Deanna (McCarthy's character) has a hard time letting her daughter go off to college. Really letting her go at all which makes this scene so relatable to me as a mother.

About LIFE OF THE PARTY movie

When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college…landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who’s not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna—now Dee Rock—embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.

Husband and wife team McCarthy and Falcone co-wrote the screenplay and produced through their production company, On the Day. Chris Henchy also produced the film, with Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Michael Disco and David Siegel serving as executive producers.

Yang (“Silicon Valley”).

One of the things that really struck me while on set was the sheer number of people and the effort that it took to film a single scene in the movie. It was fascinating to see all of the people and equipment working together to create that moment in film. With just three main characters on camera, it took many working parts to get things right. It was amazing to see everything sync up scene after scene while coming together in the most perfect way. You knew it was right and the end of the scene just from the way the director yelled cut. It was the excitement in his voice. The director also being Melissa's husband, Ben Falcone and incidentally the “hungry bear” from Bridesmaids. They shot that scene 3-4 times before they were finally happy with it.
