Working his way around a kitchen is just something that comes naturally to my husband. He grew up working in the restaurant industry and always could create something amazing with food. It is part of natural talent and training with some great chefs/cooks.

Over the years we have tried pretty much every single kitchen gadget that has come out. We love seeing what's out there and then seeing if it fits into our lives. I have noticed that some items seem to be in use constantly when the next meal is being made so I asked my husband to share his go-to items in the kitchen. He is a professional chef and after years of training plus working in kitchens, I know that his favorites are probably things that everyone could get some use out of. Knife and steel.

The first of the 5 things you need in your kitchen right now are good knives. Poor quality knives will at best not do the job very well and at worst are a danger. A poor-quality knife will not cut well, will not feel balanced in your hand, and worst of all, they will not hold a sharp edge. A knife that cannot hold an edge is dull, and dull knives are a danger. They require the cook to use excess amounts of force to cut, and if the knife slips with that force behind it, you can injure yourself quite badly. Look for a knife made from high-quality hardened steel. The tang (the bit of metal in the handle) should run the full length of the knife. Immersion Blender.

The immersion blender is a lot like the traditional blender, but instead of having a container with blades in the bottom, you get a steel shaft with blades on the bottom. It saves time and will help to up your sauce-making game (chefs like to blend sauces to get “that look”).

Cutting board.
