DIY No Sew Decorative Fabric Frames
We love crafting in this house and are enjoying a pretty hot summer here in Atlanta so far. That means we spend a lot more time inside because the air quality is not always that great. That also means we get plenty of time to craft and so we created these DIY No Sew Decorative Fabric Frames with a little help from our friends at Waverly Inspirations.
About Waverly Inspirations
The Waverly Inspirations collection takes its design direction from its rich archives of American design and updates these patterns for today's consumer. Whether you are a beginner sewer or crafter, or an experienced one, Waverly Inspirations has something for everyone. From fabric to ribbon, from craft paint to home décor. Waverly Inspirations can help you with all of your decorating needs.
DIY No Sew Decorative Fabric Frames
These adorable frames are perfect to bring a pop of color into the room or just to feature some great fabrics because you need more decor for the walls.
Materials
- Scissors
- Fabric + Ribbon (we used Waverly Inspirations fabric available here.)
- Picture frames (we used Better Homes & Gardens frames available at Walmart)
- Glue (we used Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue)
- White Paint
- Paint brushes (one large and one small)
- Garbage bags or tarp
- Stapler
Directions
Step 1
I laid down a few garbage bags on the kitchen table to protect. Next uwrap the frames and quickly paint a coat of white over them. Do not worry about the color of the frame showing through. This is more of a rustic project and the color showing through adds to the charm. Let each frame dry thoroughly. In hindsight, I should have painted all four frames instead of just the two that were framing the fabric. I can see that dark wood of the frame coming through on the fabric covered frames but I still love the overall look.
Step 2
Lay out the fabric over the frame and cut about inch less than the size of the frame. Use the tacky glue and generously cover the back part of the frame. Let glue sit a minute or two then place your fabric on the back side of the frame over the glue. Hold firmly in place and make certain that the front where the fabric is showing is to your liking. Repeat steps with second frame. Allow both frames to dry overnight.
Step 3
Now it's time to cover the second set of frames in fabric. Each frame had to be prepped by removing the cardboard backing with a sharp pair of scissors. They came right off. Next we laid the fabric over the top of the frame and cut two inches all around the frame. Then we applied glue generously to the front of the frame and stretched the fabric across while holding in place for a few minutes.
Step 4
Since we pieced together fabric for this particular fabric choice, there were a few lines that wanted to cover with ribbon. I quickly cut a few pieces of ribbon in a coordinating color and glued it on. You can see it in the second picture below.
Step 5
You are almost finished and now ready to make the hanging part of the picture. Use a coordinating color of ribbon and cut a 16 inch piece of ribbon. Add glue to half and fold completely marrying the glued ribbon. Hold together for a few minutes to set it properly and then let dry. Once the ribbon pieces are fully dry, staple them to the back of your fabric colored frame.
This project was fairly easy but time consuming because we needed to let everything dry. It is very humid here in Georgia so everything took a few days to dry completely. We are thrilled with how cute this project turned out. It really is the perfect way to add some color to any room.
BONUS Scrap Ribbon Monogram Initial Craft
I had this letter laying around that my daughter painted for me years ago. I wasn't sure what to do with it and I had these two spools of ribbon that were nice, bright colors. We used 6 yards of ribbon and a LOT of glue to complete this project. We only covered the front of the initial with ribbon instead of wrapping which makes it the perfect project for some of the scrap ribbon you might have laying around. Look how adorable it turned out and it was so easy to make.
Stay tuned for an update of these frames. We are working on redesigning my office right now and I am planning to use the frames along with some other items for a gallery wall. I will post updated pictures when the project is complete. We hope that you love these DIY No Sew Decorative Fabric Frames as much as we do.
