5 Ways to Upgrade Your Closet

For years I used the shoe cabinet that came with the house or one that I could put over my door. Finally I got smart and ordered these racks from Wayfair. I stacked four racks together and secured them to the wall. I love to look at my shoe collection now. It's kind of old, in need of an update and I didn't really love the space but it was home enough. It was a closet. Nothing special. As I have gotten more into fashion blogging this past year, I wanted my closet to look better. Just because the space is utilitarian, that doesn't it has to look or feel that way. I needed some organization and style and while there is not much to work with in this closet, I do love the results. Here are 5 Ways to Upgrade Your Closet.

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Closet

Get organized.

Getting organized is pretty crucial to any upgrade of your closet. I took the time to really go through all of my clothes. Be honest with yourself about what you will wear and won't wear. There is nothing worse than an overstuffed closet where you cannot find anything. Getting rid of things make it much easier to organize and my closet really needed some work. Our house was built in 1968 and everything is still original. It's a mid century modern in need of a facelift but we sure do love it. There isn't a DIY we won't tackle with the exception of plumbing and electrical.

I organized the closet by shoes in the middle, shirts and pants on one side over each other and then outerwear, sweatshirts, sweaters plus anything long on the other side. I have suitcases and bags on top shelves. I went through everything twice. I kept about 2/3 and have the rest ready to sell or donate. I also went through shoes and handbags to do the same thing. I was able to donate several business suits, pairs of shoes and other accessories to local jobs program for women. This made it much easier to get rid of things.

For years I used the shoe rack that came with the house or one that I could put over my door. Finally I got smart and ordered these racks from Wayfair. I stacked four racks together and secured them to the wall. I love to look at my shoe collection now.

The Rebrilliant Utility 3-Tier 9 Pair Stackable Shoe Rack is tied for my favorite. My next fave is the rug below.

Seriously. I cannot believe that I didn't think of this before. As soon as this rug arrived, I placed it down on the floor and then sat down on it for a few minutes. The plush softness makes me want to stand there barefoot which I do almost every day. It just feels so good that my youngest tried to do a few snow angels on it. The rug really makes the closet feel different. A little cozier and way more feminine along with the paint, the Home Dynamix ELLE Decor Collection accent rug instantly upgraded my closet.

Wayfair has tons of plush rugs available in various sizes and colors.

Paint.

I painted one accent wall just to add a little color and make it look a little better in there or at least a little more colorful. I chose the same teal we used in our master bathroom which I love because it is so bright. I painted one coat and let it dry overnight. I painted another coat the next day and waited one more night.

Streamline your hangers.

I cannot believe how many broken, cracked or even rusty hangers I threw away when organizing my closet. I had so many different types of hangers that nothing hung the right way in my closet. These Zober Non-Slip Suit Hangers come in packs of 50. Using these hangers actually give you more room in your closet because they fit so closely together.
