What Is The Ideal Depth Of A V Neck?

A V-neck tee can be a controversial piece of clothing, thanks to the naughty 2000s when they were synonymous with very tanned party boys from Jersey Shore.

However, in recent years, V-necks have come back with smoother, classier styles and more modest necklines. Thank goodness for that!

So if you were among those who were unsure about adding this tee to your regular rotation, you're in the right place as we're about to address the most important question – what is the ideal depth of a V-neck?

What's a V-neck

Before diving in, let's talk about what a V-neck tee is. In short, it's a collarless t-shirt with a V-cut neckline. It was first invented in the 1960s as an alternative to the classic crewneck. The designers at the time wanted to offer men something new and also something without a collar to wear under button-down shirts and other clothes.

Many guys fell in love with the V-neck as an undergarment and a t-shirt that helped them change their look with minimum effort.

Soon it became pretty normal to see guys wearing V-necks in all colors and fabrics, while we must admit that the conservative side of the population wasn't as thrilled.

The dark days

Many men avoided V-necks because they felt that the plunging V neckline was too feminine and unsuitable for a “real man.” Despite that, during the late 90s and 2000s, the V-neck styles exploded.

And, unfortunately, not in a good way. The V-necks we saw everywhere were pretty ghastly with their deep cuts (some even to the belly button), loud colors, and thin fabrics.

At that time, if you wore a V-neck, you were either oblivious to the cultural zeitgeist or were enjoying the attention.

The deep V cuts revealing too much skin and chest hair scared off everyone who was afraid to look foolish and be labeled as a douche. Good decision for those times, not so good for these days when there are a ton of great V-necks that are nothing like their predecessors.

The right t-shirt

Okay, so what do we do now? How do you avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and move forward enjoying the awesome V-necks available to us?

Well, firstly, let's deal with the neckline cut. How deep should it be?

Whether you're a gym buff, a skinny dude, or have a few extra pounds on, never go lower than four inches from the base of your throat.

That's the golden rule. But don't be too shy either; otherwise, you may as well stick to crewnecks!

Fresh Clean Tees have awesome V-necks from sleek and stretchy fabric that will work for most body types, so make sure to check them out.

Besides the right V cut, you also want the t-shirt to fit well and hug your body nicely in the right places. Don't get an oversized tee as it doesn't look well, but avoid skin-tight ones, too, unless you're shopping for a biker's uniform.

How to wear V-necks

V-neck is a great addition to any wardrobe, especially in summer, as it offers a lot of ventilation on hot days.

It's also excellent for layering on cooler days under your cardigans, hoodies, sweaters, denim jackets, and blazers.

A V-neck looks a little more put together than a crew tee and shows off your work at the gym.

You can simply wear your V-neck with your favorite jeans or chinos or pair it with summer chino shorts. If you want to give off 90s vibes, try styling it with your cargo trousers and a button-down shirt.
