Crockpot Chicken and Potatoes
Crockpot Chicken and Potatoes I admit it. I am in love with my crockpot and indeed slow cookers. They are easy to use and clean. The results are fantastic. And the aroma…I just love...
One of my favorite things that my grandmother used to make was beef stroganoff. She had this way of making it that everyone just loved and while it wasn't a difficult recipe, it was her most requested recipe. She loved making it for groups or just for us at her home. These days we still make it at home but I have a husband who is always trying to improve on every recipe so sometimes we make this with steak and fresh mushrooms and while it is amazing, nothing beats my grandmother's crockpot stroganoff. Slow-cooking your food is just such a great thing to do. We hope that this Crockpot Ground Beef Stroganoff recipe post inspires you.
Note: If your slow cooker has a saute setting you can do the first step in the cooker. Just start on saute setting and then switch to low at step 4.
Beef Stroganoff's history is a delicious blend of fact, fancy, and cultural influences. While the definitive origin story remains a delightful mystery, below is a taste of its journey.
Russian Roots: While the name ‘Stroganoff' wasn't yet attached, similar dishes featuring stewed or braised beef in creamy sauces likely existed in Russia since this period. They likely drew inspiration from French “fricassées” and incorporated Russian staples like onions and sour cream. The dish's name connection to the wealthy Stroganov family adds intrigue. One legend attributes its invention to French chefs employed by the family, catering to Count Alexander Grigorievich Stroganoff's aging teeth. Another claim Charles Brière, a French chef in St. Petersburg, named it after the family in 1891.

Recipe Evolution: The earliest known published recipe appeared in Elena Molokhovets' influential cookbook “A Gift to Young Housewives” in 1871. This version, titled “Govjadina po-strogonovski, s gorchitseju” (“Beef à la Stroganoff, with mustard”), used mustard instead of sour cream. Despite its Russian roots, French culinary techniques like sautéing and using demi-glace likely influenced the development of the dish, adding a touch of refinement.
Global Spread: Throughout the 20th century, Beef Stroganoff gained international fame. Variations emerged, incorporating ingredients like tomato sauce and paprika, reflecting local preferences. In the US, it often became a creamy casserole dish served over noodles or rice, straying from its original origins.
Intriguing Mysteries: Which Stroganoff? The identity of the specific Stroganoff associated with the dish remains unclear, adding to its historical charm. The original use of mustard instead of the now-iconic sour cream further fuels the debate about its true beginnings.
Enduring Legacy: Despite its somewhat blurry origins, Beef Stroganoff remains a beloved dish worldwide. Its versatility allows for endless interpretations, making it a culinary canvas for diverse flavors and traditions. Whether enjoyed in its classic form or adapted with modern twists, it continues to offer a comforting and delicious culinary experience.
The next time you savor a plate of Beef Stroganoff, remember its intriguing history, blending cultural influences and evolving through time to become a global comfort food classic. Whether it's a random Tuesday or you have guests, serving up a bowl of this delicious stroganoff will have everyone eager for seconds.
