Shelf Safe Milk & My Family
Shelf safe milk is something that my family and I have tried several times. I have kept some in the pantry in case we run out. It is very easy to travel with and my kids love the chocolate flavor of Horizon.
We never bought it regularly until this summer and this past week I learned a lot about the process of shelf stable milk plus why it really is SAFE to drink. Before I never really understood what made them shelf stable and how milk could exactly be safe if it wasn't in the refrigerator. This summer we went to Europe and I realized that shelf safe milk is everywhere.
At first, I couldn't figure it out. Why didn't they refrigerate the milk in the stores? We bought milk every single day and every day I wondered. I meant to ask, I wanted to ask but I didn't because I thought that the language barrier might be a problem. Finally, one day I asked the manager at the store and he explained about the milk. Apparently a lot of people from other countries ask about it.
Of course, it was shelf safe milk that they were selling.
WHAT IS SHELF SAFE MILK?
- Same real milk you know, just different packaging
- Grade A fluid milk requires no refrigeration until the package is opened.
- An easy and nutritious way for moms to provide real milk safely to their children – anytime, anywhere – without the restrictions of refrigeration.
THE PROCESS OF CREATING SHELF SAFE MILK
1. Milk has been pasteurized at a higher temperature, but for a shorter time, to preserve taste and nutrition (Shelf Safe Milk is UHT or Ultra High Temperature).
•Exposed to intense heating to temperatures from 275-284°F for only three seconds
•Passes through heating and cooling stages in quick succession
2. Immediately put into a sterile Tetra Pak shelf-safe carton that keeps out light, air and harmful contaminants
THE RESULT
Milk that lasts up to six months without refrigeration or preservatives
WHERE CAN YOU BUY SHELF SAFE MILK?
Many stores carry shelf safe milk. In a variety of sizes and options, including organic, nutritionally enhanced and flavored milks.While some stores put it in or near the refrigerated section, most don’t.
