The water here is nice and there is a lot to see underneath, so snorkeling and scuba diving are options as well.
Families tend to go to Luquillo Beach, the sand there is great and the water is clearer than other beaches. There is a natural coral reef that protects the lagoon from the Atlantic currents making it a great place for children to swim safely. Single people who are looking to mingle with other travelers or the locals will go to a beach called Ocean Park. This beach attracts more adults than families. This is a wide beach lined with palm trees and is great for swimming and other beach activities. A bar and restaurant are on the premises.
Rest is possible here as well, the beaches are great for this. Try the Segway tours offered by some of the tourism companies on the island.
