Peach Moscow Mule
The Moscow Mule is not only is it a refreshing and delicious cocktail, but its origins are shrouded in a bit of mystery, leading to some fascinating legends. We hope that this Peach Moscow Mule post inspires you.
The Mismatched Trio
This legend centers around three individuals in Los Angeles during the 1940s:
- John G. Martin: A liquor importer struggling to popularize Smirnoff vodka in the US.
- Jack Morgan: Owner of the Cock ‘n Bull tavern, facing challenges with unsold ginger beer.
- Sophie Berezinski: A Russian immigrant with a trunk full of unsold copper mugs.
The story goes that these three, each facing their inventory woes, met at the Cock ‘n Bull and pooled their resources. Martin suggested mixing vodka with ginger beer, Berezinski suggested serving it in her copper mugs, and voila! The Moscow Mule was born. This legend emphasizes the ingenuity of necessity and collaboration, showcasing how three struggling individuals combined their assets to create a drink that took the world by storm.

The Accidental Creation
This alternate tale focuses on Wes Price, the head bartender at the Cock ‘n Bull. According to this legend, Price accidentally over-ordered ginger beer and, rather than let it go to waste, decided to experiment. He combined it with vodka and lime juice, and finding the mixture surprisingly pleasing, served it to a customer – none other than actor Broderick Crawford. Crawford loved it, and the drink quickly caught on, taking the name “Moscow Mule” due to its association with vodka and the copper mugs. This legend highlights the role of serendipity and creative problem-solving in the cocktail's creation.

The Truth? Somewhere in Between
The truth behind the Moscow Mule's origin likely lies somewhere between these two legends. Each element – excess vodka, ginger beer, copper mugs – likely played a role in its creation, and individual contributions from various players may have been woven together over time. Ultimately, the exact details remain up for debate, but that only adds to the mystique and charm of this iconic cocktail.
Peach Moscow Mule
makes 2 Moscow Mules
Ingredients
- 3 ripe Georgia peaches
- peach slices for garnish
- 6 oz ginger beer
- 3 oz Grey Goose vodka
- 1 oz lime juice
- lime wedges for garnish
- ice for serving
- sprinkle of cinnamon for garnish
- sprinkle of white sugar for garnish
- copper mug
Directions
- Puree the ripe peaches using a blender. If you can’t find ripe peaches, add a sprinkle of white sugar to the puree. Set aside.
- Grab your favorite glass or copper Moscow mule mug. Serving in a copper mug is ideal as the cold metal insulates the temperature of the already chilled ginger beer which keeps the cocktail refreshing and cold.
- To serve: measure out 2 ounces peach puree, 3 ounces ginger beer, 1.5 ounces Grey Goose vodka, lime juice, and sprinkle of ground cinnamon to each glass/mule mug. Stir to combine.
- Add ice to your mug. Serve with lime and peach wedges.
You can easily make this into a peach mule mocktail by eliminating the alcohol. No matter which story you prefer, one thing is clear: the Moscow Mule's legend is a testament to the power of creativity, resourcefulness, and a good splash of vodka!
