Red Apple Banana Smoothie Recipe

Smoothies are something that I have long had a love affair with. I just love them. There are so many options and flavors available that I could really have one every single day of the week and not ever get sick of them.

I was very excited that my children grew to love smoothies as much as I do. This made healthy eating so much more fun.

One ingredient that is important to me as a mother is DHA. Vitamins and nutrients top my list for most foods that I feed my kids as do things that feed the brain.

Omega-3’s, also known as “good fats”, are a group of essential fatty acids. There are 3 types of omega-3’s: ALA, EPA and DHA. DHA is considered to be one of the most important of the Omega-3’s. It is a major structural fat in the brain and eyes, accounting for up to 97% of the omega-3 fats in the brain and up to 93% of the omega-3 fats in the retina.1 Scientists agree that DHA consumed in the diet can become available to support brain, eye and heart health.

Here in Georgia, it is apple picking season and apples make the perfect smoothie addition. Below is my favorite kid-friendly smoothie recipe. My kids love it and I love it too!

Red Apple Banana Smoothie Recipe

2 Medium Red Apples with the skin on

2 Large Bananas (no peel here)

1 cup of Horizon Organic Milk with DHA

1 teaspoon of Flaxseeds – I have found that this is about the most I can get in there before my kids complain and won't drink it

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until completely smooth. I like to garnish with an apple slice that the kids dip into the smoothie and eat. This recipe makes a creamy and delicious smoothie.

Change things up a bit and put a pinch of cinnamon in. My kids love this!

Often time I will throw in other fruit in the kitchen that is close to expiring. I put some plums and grapes in the other day. Neither of these fruits adds a lot of flavor but they do get my kids eating more fruit.

DHA belongs to a category of healthy fatty acids known as Omega-3's. DHA is a major structural fat in the body, and has been shown to support brain, heart and eye health. Not only is DHA found in foods like salmon and eggs, but it can also be found in Horizon® Organic Milk enhanced with DHA Omega-3. Learn more about Horizon’s commitment to healthy families at
