Create a game plan.
In a new business, it's sometimes hard to know what the big picture is, or could be, but not having an idea of what that looks like can hurt your business. For example, if you post 100 different ads with the idea of watching performance and reduce back to the 10 most powerful, you have a strategy. That's much different than trying a bunch of different ads randomly and seeing what happens. Bottom line: have a plan before you start a marketing initiative.
Track results.
Let me say this another way: you don't know if you're successful unless you've got a way to measure what's working. I've seen new marketers get some good things going, but they don't know it, because they're not checking back in to see how things are going. Bottom line: successful marketers monitor progress and measure results.
Raise keyword bids ONLY with just cause.
In real-world terms, that means you trying to sell a car that nobody's seen, so you raise the sales price. This relates to strategic planning and tracking results. You've got to know where you are and the marketplace value of your keyword(s) to match the marketplace in pricing. Bottom line: have a real reason to raise your bid.

Choose specific keywords.
Vague keywords attract vague traffic, who probably aren't your customers. Think of it like this ñ if you're walking through a crowd, and someone yells “Hey, you!”, you may or may not turn around. But if you're walking and someone says “Hey, you in the blue jacket!” (and you're wearing one), you'll probably turn around. Bottom line: specific, targeted keywords generate more traffic, and, therefore, more revenues.
Stick with it.
This is probably the one that is hardest for me to see. Sometimes you have to let things go a bit before they produce, or, you might have to go a bit before you get the experience to know what you're doing. It takes time to build an empire. New marketers need to give themselves, and their work, that time. Bottom line: quitting just before you get around the next corner is the surest way to stay where you are.
