How to Make Hair Softer

Let's face it, for most women, our hair is one of our most important features. We cut it, dye it, style it and so much more. After all of the things we do to our hair, the very least we can also do is to treat it right. Having great hair is no easy feat unless you are consistently doing the right things. Our Girl's Guide to Great Hair features everything you need to get those tresses exactly how you want them. Achieving soft, touchable hair is definitely within reach! We hope that this How to Make Hair Softer post inspires you.

Start with the right shampoo and conditioner.

Choose a shampoo and conditioner that is specifically designed for your hair type. If you have dry hair, look for products that are moisturizing and hydrating. If you have oily hair, look for products that are clarifying and lightweight. You may also want to consider using a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to add extra moisture.

I use Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner, and I LOVE it. Its soothing and refreshing scent is an added benefit to the super shiny and manageable hair that I get every time I use Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender. Not only does Head & Shoulders prevent dandruff, but it is different from other anti-dandruff shampoos because it is designed to nourish your scalp as well as leave you with super shiny hair that looks great. A healthy scalp is key to healthy hair, and that makes Head & Shoulders the perfect shampoo and conditioner. It's a core part of my beauty routine. It leaves my hair feeling soft and my scalp doesn't itch. Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender is new and available at your local store in the haircare aisle. This is how to solve the hair dandruff problem.

Condition every time you wash your hair.

Conditioner helps to replenish moisture and smooth the hair cuticle. Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it out.

Deep condition regularly.

Aim for a weekly deep conditioning treatment. This is especially crucial for dry, damaged, or color-treated hair. Look for masks rich in ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or avocado. Apply to damp hair, leave on for 20-30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Embrace leave-in conditioners.

Lightweight leave-in conditioners or creams can help lock in moisture throughout the day. Apply a pea-sized amount to damp hair, focusing on the ends.

Use the right products for your hair.

Look for products with hydrating ingredients. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera can help attract and retain moisture in your hair. I use hair oil every day as soon as I wake up and again before I go to bed. Using these oils has so many benefits. Avocado oil can lock in moisture and give your hair a great shine. Argan oil is perfect for controlling those flyaways while giving my hair strength and shine. Olive oil moisturizes and deeply conditions your hair. Castor oil helps with frizzy hair plus split ends. Almond oil is another one that locks in moisture and provides a great shine. I experimented a little to find which one works best for my hair. Avoid products with harsh chemicals. Sulfates and alcohols can be drying and damaging to your hair. Look for products that are sulfate-free and alcohol-free.

4 Tips for Keeping Your Hair Healthy

Oil your hair

Hair oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or almond oil can help nourish and protect your hair. Apply them to the ends of your hair before shampooing or as a leave-in treatment.

Wash less frequently.

Shampooing your hair too often can strip away its natural oils and make it dry and brittle. Aim to wash your hair 2-3 times a week, or even less if you have oily hair.

Go easy on the heat.

Blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can be damaging. Heat styling can damage your hair and make it dry and brittle. If you must use heat styling tools, use a heat protectant spray and use the lowest heat setting possible. Air dry your hair whenever possible, and if you must use heat, apply a heat protectant spray beforehand and use the lowest heat setting possible.

Avoid hot water.

Hot water can damage your hair and make it dry and frizzy. Wash your hair with lukewarm water instead.

Rinse with cool water.

Rinsing your hair with cool water at the end of your shower can help to close the hair cuticle and make it look shinier.

4 Most Useful Tips for Getting Thick Hair

Gently towel-dry your hair.

Don't rub your hair with a towel, as this can cause frizz and breakage. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and then blot your hair with a microfiber towel. Avoid rough brushing or towel-drying. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle wet hair, and gently blot your hair dry with a microfiber towel or an old T-shirt.

Detangle gently

Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush to gently remove knots. Start at the ends and work your way up to the roots to avoid breakage.

Stay hydrated.

Drinking plenty of water helps keep your hair hydrated and prevents dryness. Aim for eight glasses of water per day. Drinking those 8 glasses of water each day also has an added health benefit for your hair. Dehydrated hair doesn't grow, and that water strengthens your hair while increasing growth.

Eat a healthy diet.

What you eat affects the health of your hair. Make sure you're eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which are rich in vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth and health.

Consider supplements.

Biotin, vitamin E, and iron are all nutrients that can contribute to healthy hair growth. Talk to your doctor about whether taking a supplement is right for you.

Tips on Taking Care of Your Hair in Summer

Use a boar's hair brush.

Using a boar bristle brush helps to create healthy and shiny hair. The boar's hair helps to detangle your hair while the bristles distribute sebum to naturally coat each hair shaft. It also stimulates the skin under your hair which stimulates blood flow to the hair follicle and helps to improve the overall texture of your hair. Boar's hair brushes also remove dust particles and dirt from your hair which naturally cleans your hair.

Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

A silk pillowcase not only reduces the friction between your hair and skin against the pillow, it also helps keep that bedhead under control. Cotton pillowcases can snag and rough up your hair. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase can help reduce friction and keep your hair smooth. The natural properties of silk help reduce damage like breakage and split ends, plus a silk pillowcase is comfortable. I have been sleeping on one for years and I love it.

Get regular trims.

Split ends can make your hair feel rough and frizzy. Get regular trims to remove split ends and keep your hair healthy.

Apple cider vinegar rinse.

Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water and use it as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning. This can help remove build-up and add shine to your hair.

Things you can do to make your hair softer, depending on your hair type.

  • If you have dry hair: You may want to try using a hair oil or mask that is made specifically for dry hair. You can also try adding a few drops of coconut oil or olive oil to your conditioner.
  • If you have oily hair: You may want to try using a clarifying shampoo to remove excess oil. You can also try using a leave-in conditioner that is specifically designed for oily hair.
  • If you have curly hair: You may want to try using a curl-defining product to help to keep your curls soft and hydrated. You can also try diffusing your hair on a low-heat setting to help to prevent frizz.
