Privacy Risks With Your Smart Phone Pictures – Scary Stuff

I take a ton of pictures with my smart phone. I love finding new techniques (Pic Plz) to take photos and love sending my family the latest picture of my kids. This is one of the ways I let my family know what is going on in our lives.

In fact, I have so many images of my kids on my phone that I have to transfer them to my computer once a week.

I also get a lot of forwarded emails. A lot. Thanks Mom. Please stop now.

I get so many emails that I rarely open them. Today my stepmother sent me an interesting email. The subject said something about child safety so I opened it.

The email text said “If you have children or grandchildren you NEED to watch this. I had no idea this could happen from taking pictures on the blackberry or cell phone. It's scary.”

So I then clicked on the video and watched it.

She is absolutely right. This has probably changed my mind about the pictures I take of my kids or at least where I share them.

How does this work? Many of us have heard of Geo Tagging, right?

In many cellphones, Geo Tagging is automatically turned off. But in some (like my Samsung Epic) it was not turned off. In fact, I cannot find a way to turn it off unless I turn off GPS. However, I use the GPS on my phone on almost a daily basis and I will probably not remember to turn it off when I take pictures.

I guess that instead of posting pictures, I will just send them directly in text. I hate that!

Honestly that doesnt surprise me… I have seen twitpics on twitter with locals. I dont have a cellphone, and I dont post pics as a general rule- also never any of myslef or my family. When I do, I use photobucket, and upload from my computer- which could be tracked but I am not too worried about.

People really need to be carfeul – especially with that GPS feature!

Yes very scary! I will be sharing this post with my friends and family. Thanks for posting this I had no idea!

  4. I knew this happens, that’s why I have my GPS shut off to 911 only. I have an HTC Droid and that was one of the first things I looked for to confirm prior to uploading any pics to FB or Twitter from my Droid. I understand your GPS issue though… having to use it for other reasons.
