Hair is a very important thing to a lot of people and everyone is always looking to get luscious, glowing locks of hair. If you are someone who likes to use a lot of heat tools and or chemicals/hair color on your hair you may be experiencing a lot of breakage which can lead to dull and damaged-looking hair. Once your hair has reached a point of breakage it is near impossible to come back from it and repair the damage, that is why preventing damage is the most important thing you can do for your hair. Just like you protect your skin from sun damage with sunscreen, your hair needs to be protected from the sun as well. You can get fading, heat damage, and dryness in your hair from the harmful rays of the sun. Brushing or combing too harshly can cause breakage, especially on wet hair. In a lot of cases, breakage comes from people being too rough with their hair. When it comes to combing/brushing your hair it is important to be gentle, work in small sections, and try to avoid pulling on the hair especially when it is wet. Use a wide-tooth comb and detangle gently, starting from the ends and working your way up. Consider using a detangling spray to make the process easier.
Heat tools are a huge strain on hair. Excessive blow drying, straightening, or curling can damage hair. Let your hair air dry whenever possible, and if you do use heat styling tools, apply a heat protectant spray first. Try finding some new styles that don't require heat to switch things up and give your hair a break from the damage. If you are going to use heat tools, please make sure you are using a heat protectant spray and keeping your tools at the right temperature.
All of our hair gets dry and damaged sometimes. Dry, brittle hair is more prone to breakage. I highly recommend getting a deep hair conditioner that works well for you and using it about once a week or once every two weeks depending on the needs of your hair. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, and consider deep conditioning treatments once a week. Leave-in conditioners and hair masks can also add moisture and protect hair.
If you color or highlight your hair a lot, try switching up your color routine for a more low-maintenance look. For example, balayage color styles are so popular these days and they are a great way to keep your hair looking great but only having to color it every few months instead of every few weeks.
Popular hair trends can wreak havoc on hair. Hairstyles that pull on the hair, like tight ponytails or braids, can lead to breakage. Opt for looser styles and avoid wearing tight hair ties. If you wear extensions, get them re-done every 6-8 weeks to prevent matting and pulling.
What you eat and how you manage stress can affect your hair health. Ensure a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. Find healthy ways to manage stress, as chronic stress can contribute to hair loss and breakage.
Split ends can travel up the hair shaft and cause breakage. Get regular trims, every 6-8 weeks for most hair types, to remove split ends and keep hair healthy.
Cotton pillowcases can snag and pull on hair throughout the night. A satin or silk pillowcase creates a smoother surface that reduces friction and helps prevent breakage.
Hair is more fragile when wet. Avoid rubbing hair with a towel after showering, pat it dry gently instead. Be mindful when brushing or combing wet hair, and use a detangling product for easier management.
By following these tips, you can keep your hair strong, healthy, and less prone to breakage. If you continue to experience excessive breakage despite these efforts, consult a dermatologist or trichologist to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
