NHTSA National Child Passenger Safety Week
Did you know that 3 out of 4 carseats are not installed as they should be, keeping the children who use them from being as safe and secure as possible? NHTSA's (National Highway Traffic...
Raising avid readers is one of my main goals as a mother. I want my kids to want to read. I want them to LOVE to read. I began reading at age 3 and I don't think that I have stopped since. Reading is that important to me and to my family. My husband and I are avid readers. We always have a book or three to read.
One of the ways that I became such a good reader is through spelling. As a kid, I participated and won many local spelling bees. I took phonics which helped me with reading and then I spelled out any of the larger words in each book. I kept a notebook of my “big words” and this really helped me to become a better reader.
Did you know that Kindle is the presenting sponsor for the Scripps National Spelling Bee? Scripps is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program. Both companies, Kindle and Scripps National Spelling Bee share in the belief that reading is fundamentally important to a child’s lifelong achievement and I know that I certainly agree with that. The idea is simple and exactly what I experienced – before students were great spellers, they were great readers and early reading leads to a better vocabulary and word comprehension. I firmly believe that this is an excellent way to raise children.
Your student can use a Kindle to further their education because Kindle e-readers’ are a great tool for students with built-in reading features to help support students as they expand their reading skills and vocabulary, including:
These tools (like the Kindle and more) provide an improved reading experience that leads to greater comprehension, a stronger vocabulary and a better, uninterrupted reading experience for young readers.
Kindle will be an integral part of the 89th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee finals (aka Bee Week) taking place May 24-26, 2016 and will help spark new Bee initiatives during the school year, through the summer and into next year. For example, the Scripps National Spelling Bee will utilize Kindle technology by integrating it into the creation of word list study materials created for thousands of schools and the Kindle Vocabulary Builder feature will be worked into the process for the Bee team’s development of the word lists that students review in preparation for local Bees.
To celebrate the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Amazon is offering the Kindle for Kids bundle for $10 off the starting price of $99.99 (sale price will be $89.99) starting on May 23, 2106. The Kindle for Kids bundle comes with the latest Kindle without sponsored screensavers, a kid-friendly cover and a 2-year warranty provided by SquareTrade.
The Scripps National Spelling bee Championship finals will be broadcasted live on ESPN on Thursday, May 26 from 8p.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Make sure you ask your readers to tune in!

I wish I could spell better! We don’t have a kindle right now, but this would be a great way for kids to learn how to spell.
This looks fun! My girls all love to read and they love spelling and word games. I’ll have to look into this.
What a really neat way to use the Kindle, love this idea. Even though I am not a parent, I have seen how much reading can help kids!
We have a kindle and the twins are having fun using it. This is a great way to encourage them to read and spell better.
Sounds like a great learning device for kids. Spelling bee is a fun contest! Can’t wait to see the next one
I love that Kindle has this for kids. It is great to have apps that would help kids love reading and build their vocabulary! I’m letting my sister know about this. Her daughter would love it.
My daughter literally has over 100 books on her book shelf. Most of that is due to my philosophy of “never too many books.” Its been my goald since day 1 to raise an avid reader.
My kids already love playing on their Kindles. I will have to look into this app for them.
I love Kindles. I think it’s great so that kids can learn to read. I love using mine for reading as well. My oldest is learning to read now, so this would be great for her.
I used to join spelling bees way back in elementary. This would be so fun to watch. I’ll take note of the date.
I love how technology is helping our kids to learn so much!! I had no idea that all this was on the kindle!
The Scripps spelling be is fantastic! I always wanted to be on that. My son used an E-reader to work on his reading skills and it has been great
I bought myself and the kids a Kindle Fire HDX. We all love to read and I love the option of having help 24/7 with the HDX. I’ll tune in for the spelling bee, my oldest grand daughter competes in math and spelling so she’ll be watching too I’m sure.
I think it’s great that Kindle is partnering with the National Spelling Bee!! What a great program!!
I wish I had this technology growing up. I think that I would have read more books. I love reading on my phone. The screen size is perfect. Plus, there are a ton of free books available online to read.
I love this! Anything that encourages kids to read is good in my book-and someday when I have kids I’m totally going to make sure to get them into being avid readers. Reading is just so important.
My daughter was already reading bore Kindles were a big thing. My younger son, was not. He pushed back at every attempt to get him to read. It was ultimately games on the Kindle that made it fun and engaging for him.
Nice, My girls would love the kindle!
I could probably use something like this myself! I was always the top speller during my school years and even won spelling bees, yet that all changed once I became an adult. Thank goodness for spell checker! ~lol~
this is such a great way to teach the kids, I’m definitely interested in this kindle! thanks for sharing!
This is so nice to hear. I really want to get a kindle for me. Now I will definitely support the brand – I love brands that get involved with the community.
