Being a new mother was a learning curve; while advice helped, putting it into action was challenging. It took about a year to establish a routine and involve my husband effectively. Here are some valuable tips I wish I knew earlier. They may seem simple but can transform your parenting experience and offer some much-needed sanity.
1. Get a great babysitter and get a backup babysitter as well.
This was the best advice ever given to me. We interviewed lots of people before we decided on someone we loved. Then she got sick the first time we needed her and we had no one. We immediately found a backup and now we have 3-4 babysitters that we use on an ongoing basis.
2. Take some “me” time.
Once or twice a month, I treat myself to a solo movie outing or a relaxing pedicure. I also enjoy visiting Starbucks to read and savor a cup of tea. Sometimes, I simply stroll around the mall, indulging in me-time that requires little else. These moments are essential for my well-being, and I highly recommend them for you too!
3. Plan date nights.
My husband and I didn't go on a date for years. That is not really a good thing. Connecting with your spouse or partner is something that you have to really work at once you have children. We take turns planning date nights.
4. Stay organized.
In our kitchen, we always have a whiteboard, calendar, and chalkboard handy. Each kid's schedule is displayed next to the whiteboard, and we also maintain a hub for backpacks, coats, and shoes near the back door. Having everything organized and easily accessible saves me a lot of time and keeps things running smoothly.
5. Create family hours.
Every single night between the hours of 5-8 we have family time. Our phones and tablets are in the kitchen charging plus all computers are shut down. We even play board games after dinner.

I take me time every single day when I go to the gym. I need that time alone to decompress and I think I am definitely a better mom because I take a little time for myself every day.
I need to take more time for myself. I’m all about the kids.
I totally agree that everyone needs a date night! It is nice reconnecting with your husband/wife and it really helps you recharge!
It sounds cliche, because this is about Motrin, but Motrin makes me unstoppable. I work on the computer all day, and I get some pretty terrible tendon pain. Motrin gets rid of it fast.
We make family time whenever we can. Usually it’s in the evening after my husband and I have stopped running ourselves ragged. =D
Date night is super important. Without it, you might forget who your spouse is! I’m only kidding a little. We’re all so busy these days!
Date night and me time is so so important! I’m inspired to call the sitter!
Wow, number 2 and 3 work for me! I am implementing #5 ASAP I LOVE this idea!
I go to the gym every weekday morning to “walk” away from any problems I have. lol. Silly, but it works!
Love that you all unplug! I get My me time when I walk!
I need to work more on being unstoppable really. I have not been on a date with my husband in years (before this last month). We have no babysitter set up and I don’t get much me time either. I need to work on this!
These are great tips. I have learned to take each day as it comes. Always take time to be thankful for what you have.
GREAT tips… I always forget about me time… lately I have been scheduling a girls lunch at least twice a month and it has been great for me!
Me time is the most important thing for me. I carve some out every day. Lucky for me I have a husband who understands how important that time is for my sanity and our relationship.
We have 5 kids, time to yourself is a must or you will lose your sanity!
Our date nights occur after the kids go to bed, it is the only alone time we get. It is hard to do babysitters when you are in a new area and do not know anyone.
Thanks for the great tips! I agree, having regular date nights is really important so you can stay connected as a couple!
I have a few good babysitters. Unfortunately, they start getting to like 15-16 and get too busy to want to babysit and I have to start over again!
Great tips! Staying organized is my biggest challenge.
I need to get better at taking care of myself, I seem to be so organized and determined in everything else. So, you’d think it’d spill over to that area too. nope 🙁
Thanks for all the great tips. I need to start focusing on me so that I have more time for the munchkin.
