Self-Employment: The Key To a More Fulfilling Life

It’s funny how what is most important to you changes as you get older. When I graduated from high school, all I wanted was to be independent and live on my own. That changed as I got older and started work as a professional software developer. For a while, especially after I had my children, all I wanted was a stable and predictable life. I mistakenly thought that having a high-paying job in Corporate America could make me happy and fulfilled.

Despite changing jobs, companies, even industries, I never found the kind of fulfillment I desired. It was not until I broke away from Corporate America and became self-employed that I have managed to find true happiness. For me, having control over my own destiny and doing something I am proud of is more important than having an expensive new car or a big flat screen television.

I am not going to lie to you and tell you being self-employed is a walk in the park and you will never have any problems. I have certainly faced my fair share of issues as a self-employed individual. However, despite the occasional hardships, I have not once regretted my decision to become independent.

I think a lot of moms would like to have a work-from-home arrangement so that they can spend time with their children while earning a living. I work from home as a translator, but my assignments are few and far between. I wish the work was steadier, but I’m glad I can earn a few bucks here and there.

My husband has been self employes for 25 years as a carpenter. One of the keys to self employment I rarely see mentioned is like Mami said it is either ‘feast or famine’ at times. If you don’t have a job, or you get sick, there is no safety net there to catch you.
People who are considering becoming self employed have to budget for lean months. (or longer!)
