May is Better Sleep Month – 6 Tips for Better Sleep

I am not certain that I can remember the last time I really had a great night's sleep. Unfortunately, as an insomniac writer plus a mother of three, sleep is something that I continuously crave yet rarely get enough of.

I am constantly looking for ways to make our bedroom more of a haven rather than an office, a tv watching center, a laundry station and so much more than a bedroom.

·         Keep a sleep diary for at least 7 days, recording when you sleep, wake & eat to help your doc pinpoint causes of poor sleep

·         Spending at least 15 minutes a day outside in sunlight can help restore the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle

·         Make sure to finish a heavy meal at least four hours before bedtime

·         Before bed, try some slow stretching to gear your body into a slowed, relaxed state

·         Always check your room for potential sleep disturbances, including light shining through the drapes

·         Bedrooms that are cool, dark, quiet and comfortable are best for quality sleep

    I do not eat or drink past 8pm….I read before read, then go to sleep at 10

    The best way to a good nights sleep is leaving the kids with Grandparents… LOL. Other than that, turning off the TV, computer, and phone off at least 30 minutes before I’m going to bed… it helps me go to sleep faster and better!

    I’m probably not the best one to talk about sleep tips. But I do find it helps somewhat if I watch a half hour of “mindless” tv in bed before lights out. Nothing heavy; oftentimes it’s House Hunters. I also find I sleep better in a very cool room.

  38. I have room darkening curtains… and I shut off the tv and all other sources of distraction and get as comfy as I can. Sometimes, if I can’t get to sleep, I will read a book until I feel a bit sleepy-then shut off the light and see what happens. Getting rid of distractions and being comfortable are the most important things for me.

    I’m a night owl as well, but my best advice is when I need to go to sleep that I put all distractions, namely my laptop, away. I don’t always go to sleep quickly, but way more so than if I leave it open watching a movie or something. Also, blackout curtains do work. I work midnight-to-eight shifts a lot of the time and that helps me sleep during the day.
