How Pets Make a Big Difference for Kids in Foster Care
So, we all know that kids in foster care go through tough times, right? It’s not easy for them, and they need all the support they can get. One thing that can really help...
As a pet owner (parent), I take my responsibilities seriously. I want to raise healthy, happy pets who love to be around us as much as we want to be around them. Doing this takes some planning and some time. We show our pets how much we love them by keeping them happy. There are many ways to keep your dog happy, and the best approach will vary depending on your dog's breed, age, and personality. Below are some general tips that can help. We hope that this How to Keep a Dog Happy post inspires you.
Make sure your dog has a safe and comfortable place to sleep, relax, and eat.
Spend quality time with your dog. Cuddle, play and hang out with your dog each day. Let them know they are loved and important to you. Provide your dog with plenty of exercise each day, tailored to their breed and age. This could include walks, runs, hikes, playtime in the park, or dog sports like agility or swimming. This seems like a no-brainer but have you ever taken your dog on a nice, long walk? They are happy and tired when they get home, aren't they?
Most dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, but some breeds may require more. This could include walks, runs, hikes, or playtime in the yard. We take our dogs on two to three long walks each day to make certain that they get out to see the neighborhood and get some great exercise. We also play a lot throughout the house. My kids are constantly running around with the dogs chasing them. I am pretty certain that this raises all of our heart rates. Don't just stick to the same walk every day. Explore new parks, and trails, or even take your dog for a swim. But make sure your dog is comfortable during the walks. You can use high-quality dog harnesses to make the walk enjoyable for both your dog and you.
Take your dog to the vet for regular checkups and vaccinations. Did you know that a puppy should be brought in for vaccines every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 16 weeks old? Dogs will get distemper-parvo and rabies boosters, and other vaccinations like whooping cough or whatever you and your vet decide. From ages 1-10, your dog should visit their vet about once a year.
Once your dog reaches the age of 10, twice-yearly checkups are suggested to best serve your dog's needs. At that point, it's also a good idea to get your pet insured. Many reliable companies offer an affordable service.
Boredom can lead to destructive behaviors in dogs. Keep your dog's mind active with puzzle toys, food puzzles, chew toys, and training sessions. Rotate toys regularly to keep things interesting. Get great toys to keep your pet busy and give them a space. We have a big basket of toys by the front door that our dogs can choose from throughout the day. We have balls to throw, a tug-of-war rope, and many other items to keep them constantly entertained. We throw out toys once they become unusable and replace them as needed. In addition, our dogs don't chew any of our stuff because they are too busy playing with their toys. You can also try teaching your dog new tricks or commands.
Dogs are social creatures and need interaction with other dogs and people. Take your dog to dog parks, doggy daycare, or on walks in new places to help them socialize. Socialize your dog with other dogs and people of all ages and sizes. This will help them become well-adjusted and comfortable in different situations.
Brushing your dog's fur helps to remove dirt, mats, and loose hair. It also helps to distribute natural oils throughout their coat, keeping it healthy and shiny. We brush our dog‘s teeth, give them regular baths, clip their nails, and clean their ears regularly.
Feed your dog a healthy diet. Choose a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for their age and activity level. Pets are happiest when they eat the right food. This means no table scraps. Food should be nourishing and healthy for your pet to eat. Be careful not to overfeed your pet and feed him food appropriate for his size and age.
Water is essential for your dog's health, so make sure they always have access to a clean bowl of water.
Train your dog using positive reinforcement techniques like praise, treats, clickers, and play. This will help your dog learn new behaviors and build a strong bond with you. Avoid punishment, as this can damage your bond and make your dog anxious or fearful.
If your dog is a working breed, consider giving them a job to do, such as fetching the newspaper, carrying a backpack on walks, or participating in agility or obedience training.
Pay attention to your dog's body language and signals. If your dog is acting stressed or anxious, give it space or remove it from the situation. Give it space when it needs it, and respect its boundaries.
If you work long hours, consider a doggy daycare or hiring a dog walker to give your dog some company and exercise during the day.
The most important thing is to pay attention to your dog and what makes them happy. By providing them with love, care, and attention, you can help them live a long and happy life. Loving a pet can be one of the most rewarding experiences ever. Our pets show us as much love as we show them! Keeping them happy and following the steps above must show them that we love them.

My dogs are rather spoiled. The puppy tends to play the most and I’m constantly having to buy new toys for him. He chews or tears them up. I rather buy new toys than other things though.
Don’t forget about trimming their nails and brushing them often if they have long hair.
