Do you know the best way to clear out clutter or how to eliminate the clutter from your home? Do you know how to get rid of sentimental clutter? What about how to throw away clutter? If you are like me and you want to get rid of the clutter once and for all, then our post on how to get rid of excess stuff is exactly what you need.
Did you know that there is even such a thing as digital clutter? Once I removed the majority of my digital clutter, I became much more productive because I could find things easier. You can only really conquer clutter by learning the root causes.
Why are you collecting stuff? We all know that unnecessary clutter in your home can affect your state of mind. There are many reasons human beings are so easily drawn to having so much junk around the house. We hope that you love this How to Get Rid of Clutter post.
People often find a great bargain or a new bit of décor that they impulsively buy. But the thrill of the buy might often be short-lived. Many of these purchases are not always worth it and the struggle is to decide where to spend money versus where to skip or abandon the cart.
I tend to buy less now and I am very deliberate in finding quality items. This is a critical step that I often have to remind myself about daily. I constantly struggle so my 24-hour rule for spending more than $25 is a huge money saver for me.
Once those 24 hours are up, I don't actually buy the items about 90% of the time which saves me so much money.
What items do you appreciate and use the most in your home? Look for those things of true value: your grandmother's quilt, baby albums, wedding albums, wedding dresses, family heirlooms. etc.
I have things in storage for all three kids because I learned long ago that we lose things that aren't immediately put in their place. The storage containers are really nice, long-lasting Rubbermaid crates labeled with each child's name stored in the basement.
I use the Rubbermaid Roughneck️ Storage Totes 31 gallons each. Everyone in my family uses this same storage tote as well. I literally love this storage crate more than any other I have tried.
We probably have 20 of them to organize holidays, food props, kids' clothes, kids' memory boxes, my old things, my husband's old things and so much more. They are not cheap.
They are sturdy, long-lasting, and easy to move around if needed. Once you have the items that you want to keep safely stored away, I find that it is much easier to start sorting out everything else.
A good start to sorting through the clutter to decide between items as being critical and non-critical. Once they are identified mercilessly start gleaning out everything else. Donate unwanted items to charity. give things away to others, and sell items of value. Pare down as much as possible.
Gather only those things you really, really cannot part with without regret. For example: do you really need 4 of your grandmother's coats, some of her towels and 10 or so of her dresses? Wait that's just me? I mean I already have her quilt so how much more do I keep? Set a boundary on this immediately. It's hard to decide on what to do with items of sentimental value. I get that.
Organize one room at a time for 10 to 30 minutes a day. Have three or four big bins ready and labeled:
Then systematically fill the bins in one 30-minute session and go through one room at a time. This breaking up of the chore makes it far more likely to get done.
It also helps if you have a general rule that no new stuff is to be allowed into the room you are decluttering unless it is related to the task at hand. Once the bins are filled, you are done for the day.
We've found that doing this in small chunks like this led to us completing more projects overall.
