Create categories
Before you touch anything, scan the cluttered space that you are going to be working on/ working with, and think about the categories that you can use to go through all the items and place them in these bundles. You may start by sorting your clutter by room, person, function, type, or other categories.
Specific spaces often require specific sort categories, such as in a kitchen pantry, you may want to sort your items into; baking supplies, spices, mixes, snacks, and so on. The different categories in your garage or your guest room will differ and be unique to you and how you utilize these spaces. Therefore ensure that you have categories that are suited for you and for the items that you need to sort out. However, we advise that you try to stay away from categorizing items as “miscellaneous” as more often than not a number of your items will end up in this category when you could have had a more specific category for those items.
Make signs
Writing each sort category on an index card, sticky note, or a sheet of paper, and having the categories defined as temporary guideposts will help you to organize your belongings. Writing down the categories may seem obvious however you are trying to make it as easy as possible for yourself, going forward in the future. Category signs also help to make it easier to work on decluttering your space with other family members or others assisting you. Therefore with signs in place, everyone can work toward the same goal at his or her own pace therefore creating minimal interruptions and allowing work to be done more speedily.

Identify items in those piles/ categories
While sorting out your items, try to identify what you truly want to keep. Notice that you are doing more than merely discarding old, broken, or out-of-style items. Focus on important items, rather than focusing on what to get rid of, keep reminding yourself that you are trying to select the best of the best.
Working with these piles helps to eliminate a lot of the anxiety and second-guessing associated with the decluttering process. Go through your piles one by one.
If your one pile is relatively large, try to first sort it out into subcategories such as dividing your “shirts” pile into “summer” and “winter”, or other similar subcategories. If some items are broken or worn out, decide whether you are willing to repair them or eliminate them. If you have a pile of duplicate items, then try to sort it out by eliminating duplicates or only keeping the best items.
Sorting and classifying spaces
Is your space a multi-purpose space? For example, most of us utilize our kitchen for meal preparation, food storage, and eating family meals. Perhaps you also use your kitchen table as a homework station or a craft area for young kids, if so, then it may make sense to have craft supplies stored in and around the kitchen, however, ensure that you have a dedicated space for your craft supplies.
If you come across items that don't fit in the category of the space, they will need to be moved and placed in their dedicated space. When you embark on the sorting work, it is helpful to have some specific tools on hand to make the process more smooth, you will need to make use of trash bags and sorting containers. While sorting, we recommend that you have a large flat surface to sort out all your items, you can use a bed, large table, or kitchen island, however, if your space is extremely cluttered, setting up a sorting area in a nearby room may be the best solution.
