Summer is just around the corner, which means you're going to encounter some longer days, warmer evenings, and plenty of fun outside. But before you break out the bikini and start heading to the beach every day and pull the grill forward to have your evening barbecues, it's now that's the perfect time to tackle a few of the house jobs that often get left behind.

House Jobs to Get Done Before Summer

This will help your home to run smoothly all season long. It's like a mini home reset. It's not quite as spring clean, but it gets your home feeling more in order so that every time you're running your air conditioning or you're barbecuing that fat steak, you feel good about how your home is left. It's a good way to transition from the busy spring into a summer of ease and enjoyment. So let's take a look at some house jobs to get done before the summer starts.

Give your air conditioning a good clean.

Whether you have ducted air conditioning or not doesn't really matter. The point is you need to make this a priority. It should be a priority if you have a HVAC system too because you need the filters cleaned and you need the air to be cool and smelling nice throughout the summer months. Changing out the air filters is a good place to begin because dirty filters make your system work harder and reduce air flow. You can then give the vents a good vacuum to clear out any dust. If you have a central AC unit, check the outdoor condenser, make sure that it's free of any leaves, dirt and debris.

Give your appliances a clean.

You don't have to scrub every nook and cranny of every single appliance, because we're assuming here that you clean your appliances more than once a year – but they still need a refresh! A washing machine cleaner and a dishwasher cleaner are two of the easiest ways to clean out two of the biggest appliances that are mostly used in your house. You can have somebody professionally come in and clean out your oven for you, and you can give your smaller appliances a wipe and a vacuum out. Don't forget toasters have trays that have crumbs that build up, so emptying that can stop you from causing a fire when you're just making breakfast.

Wash the windows inside and out.

Sunshine can always feel so much better when it's streaming through clean windows. Dust, pollen and fingerprints build up on windows over time and rain spots can also be a build up on the glass and fibres. Grabbing a bucket of warm soapy water is a good place to begin, and you can pop out any fly screens you've got, hose them down, and then clean the windows thoroughly before popping the fly screens back on. It's a simple way to easily and instantly brighten your space.

Give the outdoor furniture a good clean.

You're moving into the summer, which means you're going to be pulling out your old sofas and your benches from the garage or the shed and getting them freshened up, ready to have fun with your friends. By giving your outdoor furniture a good clean, you're going to have somewhere comfortable to sit in those long evenings. For plastic or metal furniture, a little baking soda and water can go a long way. For outdoor covers and cushions, give them a good shake or a Washington if they're removable, and use soapy water to clean the fixtures. Everything will look brand new and you can leave it all outside to dry in the sun.

Organise outdoor buildings.

From the garage to the shed, you want to make sure that everything is organised. Warm weather makes more time outside to be pleasurable, which means that you need to get the bikes out, the garden tools, the patio umbrellas and the coolers. Make it easier to find what you need by giving your garage or shed a seasonal refresh. Pull everything out, sweep out the floor, dust the shelves, and get rid of anything that's broken, expired, or hasn't been used in years. You can then group out the items by activity, putting the most used items to the front so you don't have to dig every time you want to get them out again. It takes a bit of time, but it's incredibly satisfying to know that you are ready for the summer.

Prep the yard.

Whether you're planning to have a full vegetable patch or you just want a tidy lawn, spring is the best time to get the outdoor space ready for the summer. Cleaning out the flower beds and mowing the lawn very short is a good place to start, and then you can remove any dead plants or leaves. By throwing back overgrown shrubs and trees, you can keep everything looking clean and tidy. If you haven't already, start reseeding patchy grass or lay down fresh mulch ready for the sunshine.

Clean out your gutters.

People usually do this job twice a year in the summer and the winter, and it's not the most glamorous job to do, but cleaning out your gutters before the summer storms roll in is important. During the windier spring months, leaves, twigs and dirt can clog up the gutters and stop the water from draining properly. This can lead to water damage, mold or even foundation issues, and all of it could be avoided. With a ladder, gloves and a bucket, you can scoop out all of the debris and then run some water through the downspouts to make sure everything is flowing freely. If you're not comfortable with doing this yourself, call the local handyman and they can knock it all out in an hour or two.

Test your fire alarms.

Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should be checked more than once a year, and this is one of those times. Go around your home and test each smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm. If it's been a while, you can call the fire services, because they should offer this to you for free. If any of your alarms or carbon monoxide alarms beep weakly or not at all, replace the batteries immediately.

Flip your mattress.

If it's not a pillow topped mattress and you haven't already done a bedding refresh this spring, now's the time. Strip the beds off, wash the mattress covers and the pillows, and flip or rotate your mattress to keep it from wearing unevenly. Then you can swap out the heavy winter comforters for lighter summer blankets. While you're at it, open the windows and air out the bedrooms while the mattress is in there. There's nothing quite like fresh air and sunshine to revive your mattress and make the room feel better.

Give the grill a clean.

Summer means grilling season and your BBQ deserves to shine. Before you fire it up, you need to make sure that you've taken the time to clean it thoroughly. Scrub in the grates with a grill brush. Emptying the grease tray and wiping down the exterior can all make a big difference. If you use a gas grill, check the propane tank and test for any leaks. You can do this with a mixture of soap and water. If bubbles form, there's a leak. Once it's cleaned and ready, you can top up the charcoal or the propane and you'll be set for your first cookout of the summer.

Touch up your outdoor paint.

Both winter and spring can do a number on your fencing and your outdoor equipment. Over time, paint on the trim, the railings, the doors, and the fences can start to chip or fade out. You can take a quick walk around your house and look for any areas that could use a little bit of love. With a fresh coat of paint or even just a good scrub with soap and water. You'll make a massive difference in an instant. Just don't forget the front door. Cleaning or repainting it can give a boost to your home's curb appeal.Makes it look much fresher.

Do the leak test on your windows and doors.

As the weather is warming up, you don't want cool air escaping through tiny cracks around your windows and doors. Check around them for leaks so that you can seal up these leaks before the summer rolls in. You don't want any of that freshened cold air from your air conditioner to leak out of the house and cost you money. Replacing the weather stripping is a good way to refresh your windows and doors, and it's a quick fix that can save you money on your energy bills while keeping your house comfortable at the same time.
