This spring we have partnered with Coupons.com to share our spring cleaning projects and how we have saved money as we organize by using their cleaning-friendly offers. This week we are back with some fun hacks to make closet cleaning a bit more fun. Organizing my closet is one of my all-time favorite things to do each spring; not only do I get rid of clothes that no longer fit or that I just don’t wear, I also make some room for new seasonal pieces that will inevitably make their way into my closet.
If you are anything like me, then you might already have your eye on a few spring items so it’s time to make room for your new seasonal favorites. The key to successful closet organization is maximizing space and making certain that you only keep items you will actually use. I’ve created some practical and fun closet cleaning hacks and tips to make organizing your wardrobe quick, easy and painless.
This seems like a big step, but it’s important. Remove everything from your closet, wipe down all of the shelves and vacuum the floor to provide a clean slate for reorganizing. I also want my closet to smell fresh and clean now that winter is over, so I spray my favorite Unstopables™ Fabric Refresher with Febreze. I love the Shimmer scent and right now you can get 0.50 off of one Unstopables Fabric Refresher on Coupons.com.
Dividing and conquering is what I do when it comes to cleaning out my closet. If you separate your closet organizing into sections, it is a little easier and provides a sense of accomplishment after each section is complete. For example, I might start with my shoes first, then move onto dresses or dress clothes and then go from there.
Now that you’ve taken everything out of your closet, it’s important to put back clean clothes to do the task right. Before putting away my winter wardrobe items, I wash them with Cheer (get 0.75 off one Cheer Detergent 50 oz our larger) and some Unstopables In-Wash Scent Booster (get 0.50 off right now), which makes my sweaters and sweatshirts smell fresh and clean. There’s nothing like a clean closet filled with clean clothes to make everything feel fresh for spring.
Years ago we installed California Closets from Target and they made organization so much easier. But you don’t need a full closet system to make organization quick, simple and effective. For example, I added shelves above my handbags to store any extra purses/bags that I may not use as often. Also, this handy hook on the door from Target makes my scarves and belts easy to find. Right now, Coupons.com has great offers for Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond so you can create your own “custom” closet this spring.
I know that everyone has their own organizational system for finding what they need in their closet. For me, I group things together by color and type so that when I am looking for something specific I can easily find it. I love the items available at The Container Store, which help me create the perfect closet organization system. Now my closet is easy to navigate plus it looks clean and streamlined, which I love.
These five tips will help get you organized now, but what about preparing for the season to come? After I complete my spring closet cleaning, I hang a bag in each closet, including my kids’ closets. Throughout the season, I remove clothing from our closet shelves that no longer fit, are items that we’re sick of wearing or that need to be repaired and store them in these bags. Twice a year I go through each bag and set aside anything that needs repair and take everything else to Goodwill.
A clean, organized closet gives me peace of mind, but even better, provides a little extra room for a new outfit or two. Coupons.com has great deals on products that will get your closet into shape as well as some of my favorite stores including Target and Kohl’s.

I don’t think I have ever cleaned my closet, so it could probably use a good one. Thanks for the tips!
I’m a closet organizing junkie, I need to be able to look inside and see everything instantly. We just redid my closet this weekend so these tips are fresh in my head: use the same hangers for all clothes (i love the slim hangers), create sections for each type of clothing, and utilize each and every square inch by using pull-out drawers/racks, rubbermaid drawers, etc. I think the best tip I learned throughout the process, though, was to stop shopping. Immediately 😉
You’ve given me the nudge to tackle my closet. I’m been putting it off for a couple of weeks. I love the clean, light smell of Febreze. I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a scent that I didn’t like from Febreze. I like that you recommend taking everything out, vacuuming and wiping everything down.
These are good tips, when I am closet cleaning I like to change the closet depending on the season but since I have more summer clothes than winter I have put my jackets one side and tees and trousers/leggings are folded and everything else hung. Then shoes have their own closet.
I did this last Sunday! I actually donated the majority of my clothes and shoes to charity and it felt so good to declutter and also donate at the same time. I love having a nice, clean and fresh closet now, no mess makes me happy! 🙂
Thanks for these spring closet cleaning tips. I am just thinking that this is exactly what I need to do with mine! Love the shoe rack and I agree if it smells good it makes me feel better!
I need to do this asap! Great tips I will take your advice while trying to tackle our closets this week!
I think I’m going to tackle my main master closet today. This weekend I ended up sorting it to only one side. The other side was for stuff I wasn’t really into wearing much any more. I need to gut it, clearly! Ugh, I dread doing it… lol
I’ll be cleaning out and organizing my closet soon and you have some great tips. I love it when I am organized enough to put every thing in the correct spot and give away what I don’t wear when replacing it with new items bought. I do really good for awhile and then get distracted and I’m back to cleaning my closet again and swearing I’ll do better next time.
I definitely need to do a few of these hacks because I have so many shelves in the closets that have been untouched in months. I need to pick up Febreze spray, I’m a huge fan of the brand and all their products.
Thank you so much for your closet organization tips. I have been doing a little spring cleaning every day. I can’t wait to pick up some Unstopables Fabric Refresher after reading about it and I’m sure my home will smell spring fresh when I use it.
Your post looks great and I love these tips. I love using Fabreeze as well, it smells really good.
I arrange my closet by items so all dresses together, all long sleeved shirts, t shirts yada yada. I also arrange them by colors & sleeve length. Im sort of ocd about it.
My fiancee and I have a running joke that when we are rich enough HE WILL HAVE HIS OWN CLOSET to be a slob in and I will have mine! I love to keep my clothes clean and organized and it drives me crazy to see it sloppy! He needs to read this ; )
I was so happy seeing these in store! Thank you for the tips and you bet I’m picking me up a bottle.
I guess I’m going to have to do this soon. I need to remove everything from the closet really. I’d love to try that new Febreze on all of my things.
I wish i had your closet im just seething with jealousy!!
I have a tiny closet and try to do what I can in it. I love the febreeze idea and just taking everything out and making sure that I can maximize my tiny space. I found that by using Unstoppables i dont have to use frebreeze as much as that stuff is just the bomb.com
I have a small closet so I usually take everything out and purge what I can. The hubby is the worst lol i love using febreeze to make things a bit fresher but in most cases i have been using unstoppable and they ust make the closed smell like mmmmmm amazing!! I am actually moving to a place with a decent sized closet and will put all these tips toe use right away. Thank you
I like to clean out all the clothes i have not worn during the last season. I do this at the end of each season. It is a great way to keep the clutter down.
What an informative post. One of the reasons why I love Spring so much is because I can air out the house and start ridding it of the crud that we just don’t need. The Febreeze product looks great…something that would be perfect for our stinky and boy filled home.
I just went through and got rid of a bunch of my clothes. Two garbage bags full…of just mine! I always thought I didn’t have that many clothes but apparently I did…oops.
These are great tips for closet spring cleaning!! I had no idea that Febreeze had Downy Unstoppables now!! I Your results look great and extremely well organized to be able to easily maintain throughout the year!
When I look at my closet, I just go, “eh” then close the closet doors and go back to bed lol. However, I do love the smell of Down Unstopables in my laundry 🙂
My closet is in dire need of organizing and some spring cleaning. I love how well organized you have your shoes, whereas I have all mine scattered in two large tote containers.
Have to find the energy for spring cleaning! Will follow these tips once I do!
Very colorful post.everything look so cleaned and perfect.we need to do the cleaning closet everu season.here are some great product to use and tips.tjnx for sharing
It’s as if you’re talking to me, lol. I have a system, I know what to do. The only problem that I need to work on is how to return the stuff ( now a pile of clothes ) on my bed back to my closet. It piles up morning after morning after morning. PS. I need Febreeze.
It’s almost as if you’ve read my mind with this post! I NEED to get on this but I’m procrastinating in a big way! I haven’t even looked at my spring clothes yet!
I need to do this real soon. My closet is packed with stuff. I have to put away the Winter clothes to give room for the warmer clothes.
These are great tips. I need to spring clean my closet and my husbands closet. I love the shoe rack you have, I definitely need one of those. I also LOVE Toms shoes. They can be somewhat of an addiction in my household between myself and my girls.
One love your closet. I wish I could get more things in there for customizing it a bit to make it easier to keep it neat year round. But another great hack for cleaning your closet is to get help. I just cleaned out mine and I had my mom help me. It was great to have someone there to say you don’t wear this or that so get rid of it. Plus it was great to have someone there when it go overwhelming at times. Then the next weekend I helped her with hers. Now I have a super clean and color coordinated closet. Don’t know how long it will last but there is hope.
These are great tips for Spring cleaning! I always get overwhelmed and give up, but maybe this year I will start with the closets!
This post makes me feel so much better because I thought I was the only one who has a large bottle of Febreze in her closet! LOL! Even my hubby now has his own bottle. We love that stuff!
I’ve started tackling spring cleaning with the closet. My biggest problem is I don’t like to part with anything no mater how many years (should I say decades…) it hasn’t been used! I’m a great one for spritzing clothes or even in the air a mix of fabric softener and water – I need to try Febreze!
I haven’t tried the spray version of the Unstoppables with febreze…I gotta check that out. As for my closet, I don’t have a lot of space to really work with, so my stuff is like all over our place. However, I am going to utilize the ‘section off your closet’ tip to get more organized. I could also benefit from purchasing a few items for organization.
I just completely redid my closet like a month ago!!! Hoping I can keep it looking fabulous because I love how easy it is to find things now 🙂
We just finished cleaning out closets and the big wire shelf in our room. Now it’s a matter of organizing everything to decide what stays and what goes.
Stacie – I am definitely going to get some Unstopables™ Fabric Refresher with Febreze – I love that idea – and I do have my clothes organized by style and color to make it quicker to find – pulling out some each day to give away and making room in my closet! Thanks for the coupon, also!
My Closets are such a mess right now.I definitely need to work on them soon. Thanks for the coupons, I needed them.
As soon as I read that title I put my hands up to my ears “la-la-la-la-I-can’t-hear-you” – ugh, do I have to spring clean my closet?!? It needs sooooo much help! I do like the idea of using Febreeze though!
I loved the way this stuff smelled. I’ve used it and LOVED it. I need to clean out my closet FOR SURE! thanks!
Ugh, I do not even want to think about my closet! You have some great tips and the Unstoppable spray would make for a nice and fresh scent.
Ok. I need a shoe organizer. That is awesome. My shoes are currently in a pile on the floor. Oops.
We have small closets so in order for us to switch out for seasons we have to box up and unbox. Its not really a whole lot of fun.
Keeping my closet organized is very important to me. I clean out my closet weekly and keep things coded and sectioned by type of clothing. It works well for me and I’m not wearing the same clothes over and over as I can see all my pieces.
I’ve been trying to talk the wife into just grabbing the kids and dog, then just setting the house on fire for spring cleaning, but she seems reluctant. Short of that, these look like some solid ideas as well.
These are wonderful tips when going for a spring cleaning – I would need a few of those tricks myself.
These are awesome tips and I will be using some of these or maybe all indeed. I have to try the Un Stoppable products which I can almost smell the scent now. Thanks so much for sharing.
I’ve been wanting to start cleaning our closets but still haven’t gotten around to doing it. We’ve had such a hectic schedule lately. Thank you for the great tips though. I hope I get I get to start this weekend. 🙂
I so need to do this to my closet and soon. Thanks for the reminder.
My mantra when cleaning the closets is donate donate donate. If I haven’t worn it or used it in awhile and it’s not a precious keepsake, out it goes.
These are great tips! My closests could all use a good spring cleaning, so these were right on time.
I’m working on our closet right now. I need more room fo rmy shoes. I love your shoe rack. I need about 5. :-/
Im sold! I am still doing some spring cleaning right now but I would love to try this new Febreeze product to freshen my clothes!
I love the tip to have a closet “system” that works well for you! I hang my shirts by color, in order of the rainbow. It sounds a bit silly, but if they aren’t hung that way, I can’t find anything! My husband just throws them on the rod in any order and it drives me crazy. Thanks for a great article!
