Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right
In the constantly evolving world of board games, Leder Games has become well-known for its innovative and attractive game designs. Their two main games, Root and Oath, have garnered widespread attention and praise for their complex mechanics, compelling narratives, and stunning artwork. Let's explore what sets these games apart and how they have captivated the hearts of board gamers around the world, including my own. We hope that this Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right post inspires you.
Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right
Root, a game designed by Cole Wehrle, is a strategic board game that sets itself apart from the competition with its asymmetrical gameplay and stunning woodland theme. Players take on the roles of various factions competing for control of the wilderness they call home.
What makes the gameplay of Root especially fascinating is how each faction operates under an entirely different set of rules and objectives. For instance, the Marquise de Cat aims to industrialize the forest while the Eyrie (Birds) build roosts to establish a new kingdom for themselves. My personal favorite faction is the Vagabond. They play all sides while trying to accomplish their goals with ulterior motives. It also helps that their meeples are super cute!!!

Gameplay Dynamics
At the center of Root’s appeal lies its variability. Each game feels completely different than the last as players explore new strategies and objectives between the factions. Root supports two to four players but expands up to six with the various expansions. This variability and the dynamic interplay between many factions makes Root a highly replayable game, with no two sessions ever feeling the same.
Art and Design
The artwork, illustrated by the amazing Kyle Ferrin, is playful yet filled with intricate details, perfectly complementing the game's theme. Each card and board piece is not only a visual masterpiece but also enhances the storytelling aspect of the game, pulling players deeper into the world of Root.
Expansions:
The Marauder Expansion
The Marauder Expansion introduces new factions including the Lord of the Hundreds and Keepers in Iron. As the Lord of the Hundreds, your goal is to spread distrust and division. Meanwhile, the Keepers in Iron are on the hunt to recover ancient relics.

The River Folk Expansion
The River Folk Expansion introduces one of my favorite aspects of the game, the Mechanical Marquise, which allows players to take part in a solo game! Besides the Mechanical Marquise, this expansion brings The Riverfolk and The Lizard Cultists, as well as new vagabonds!!!
