Part of being parent is making choices when it comes to my kids and television programming. There are a lot of things my kids would love to watch but there are many things that...
Family Volunteer Day, held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and now in its 26th year, is a day of service that demonstrates and celebrates the power of families who volunteer together, supporting their neighbors and neighborhoods. Family Volunteer Day powered by generationOn is November 19th and sponsored by The Walt Disney Company.
generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, is dedicated to providing programs and resources that support the development of caring, compassionate and capable kids and teens through service, empowering them to become changemakers in their communities and the world. One of my most favorite things to do as a family is to volunteer. We volunteer as a family many times per year and we often times do it with extended family as well. Pictured in the post are when several of our Scout troops got together to volunteer in our community. We did a garden improvement project at the elementary school the kids attended.
This was a child led project meaning the kids were given a budget and did all of the planning. This was such an amazing task for the kids to tackle because they were 100% in charge. In fact, the picked the project.
Volunteering is a wonderful way for families to encourage children to be change makers in their communities and the world, while they learn valuable real life lessons about kindness, caring and compassion. Every family can make a difference, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. They can do something as simple as writing a thank you note to a member of the military or checking on an elderly neighbor to volunteering at a more traditional event arranged by a local charity, hospital or faith-based organization.
Families who share their Family Volunteer Day experience on the site become eligible to win one of four $500 gift cards to help with holiday shopping and five “family night out” prizes, consisting of dinner and a movie. Additionally, families are encouraged to use #familyvolunteerday to share ideas and raise awareness of the Day on social media.

I am a Family Volunteer Day Blogger Ambassador. This post is part of a sponsored campaign. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.
I think it’s so important to volunteer as a family, it really helps instill a spirit of cooperation and giving in kids. I didn’t know there was a day dedicated to this!
I can’t think of a better gift to give your kids than the gift of service to others! We volunteer every weekend with our local animal shelter and I see how giving back has changed both of my kids in ways that are hard to articulate! So glad there is a day dedicated to this initiative!
This is a wonderful way to teach kids how to give back to others. My son felt how good it was the other day when we gave somebody begging for food all of his apples. He was beyond excited and talked about it all day long. I want him to learn more of that.
We need volunteers so bad at our schol. I am going to brng this up to my PTO to try!
I didn’t realize Family Volunteer Day was November 19th! Perhaps my husband and I could go out and volunteer somewhere!
I had no idea there was even a family volunteer day. We volunteer together as a family and have since my son was young. It was important to that both my kids were taught to give back from a young age and he looks forward to our projects. Now that I know there is a “day” for this , I have to plan something!
What a great way to do something together as a family. You are also giving back and teaching great values all at the same time which is so awesome.
Volunteering can be so fulfilling. Doing it as a family is a great idea. Even the smallest thing can make someone’s day.
That is my sister’s birthday-11/19th-fun! We have not volunteered as a family but my husband and I do volunteer separately at church.
Ah I love this! Me and my family want to start a yearly service project at our thanks giving get together. Thanks!
We volunteer a lot with our kids. Just this past summer we were part of a wetland evaluation program. I think we learned more about the bugs in the water in one summer than most people do in their lifetime.
It is so important to volunteer whenever you can. My kids and I go to the local animal shelter every week to help out.
This is a great way to teach kids how to give back to others. My son felt how good it was the other day when we gave somebody begging for food some of our lunch in Philly!
It is a wonderful thing to make volunteering and service to others a family tradition. It is good for our children, our families and our world.
I’m looking forward to doing some volunteer work with my boys this day! It’s great to show kids how important it is to help others.
I am loving this initiative. I think it is so great to do volunteer work as a family.
I LOVE this idea! I had no idea that Nov 19th was family service day, what a great way to teach your kids the importance of serving!
With the many days for different things these days, this is a great one! Volunteer work as a family is a great idea!
