How to Get Kids Cooking in the Kitchen

Cooking with Kids in the Kitchen

Cooking with your children is a great way to bond and it can be an educational experience as well. However, some children just don't think cooking is much fun. Getting your kids in the kitchen and helping you cook can be a challenge at times, but with a little persistence it can be done.

HOW TO GET KIDS COOKING IN THE KITCHEN

MAKE IT FUN!

Anytime mom or dad does something that looks like fun, the kids want to join in. The best way you can get the kids in the kitchen is by making cooking look fun! Once the kids realize you are having fun in the kitchen they will be begging to join in and help you get some cooking done.

COOK KID FRIENDLY FOODS

Trying to get your kids involved in cooking while making a salad probably isn't going to work. Start off by making your child's favorite meal and have them give you a helping hand. You can also try cooking other fun items like cookies, cakes, rice krispie treats, homemade ice cream or anything else that kids love. When children know they are getting a special treat they are more likely to want to join in on the fun!

GET THEM THEIR OWN SUPPLIES

Kids loving having things that are just theirs. If you want your children to actively cook with you in the kitchen, pick them up their own supplies. Things like spatulas, apron, mixing bowls, measuring cups and any other kitchen items will make your child feel like they have a special place in the kitchen. Most of these items you can pick up at the Dollar Store or Wal-Mart at a very affordable price.

LET THEM USE THE POWER TOOLS

Just about every child loves being able to use the “big people” tools, so let them have a go at it. Don't be afraid to let your kids use the mixer, toaster oven, microwave or any other kitchen tools. You will of course need to supervise young children but they should be able to handle any kitchen tool. Not only is this fun for them but it teaches them responsibility and how to properly use important kitchen tools.

Teaching your children how to cook and having them learn their way around the kitchen is a valuable lesson. Kids need to learn responsibilities and cooking is a huge one! Learning how to cook is a life long lesson and will create wonderful memories for the both of you.

Another way to get them into the kitchen is if you garden, and they enjoy gardening is give ‘them’ a row of whatever they choose (peas, broccoli etc) Kids do eat what they grow and will brag about that the entire meal which is a good thing!

  3. I find this to be an interesting concept. I don’t cook at all and only recall helping in the kitchen on holidays. My mom didn’t really like cooking though either so maybe that’s why I never had any interest in it. We had fun coloring Easter eggs though!

  18. I love everything about this post. I started helping/cooking with my mom at a very young age. When kiddo came in to my life at the age of 3, I was able to start passing things I learned on to her, even if it was really simple tasks. Now that she is 10, she can pretty much make a cake all by herself. Irish Soda Bread is her big thing.

Cooking wit kids is so important. Besdies the fun, it is pratical. Kids learn how to prepare and prep meals and learn to enjoy their food. It is also educational since many recipes use measuring. Cooking is a time math skills can come in handy!
