Will America's entrepreneurial spirit continue to define its destiny?

Howard Wolk and John Landry's book, “Launchpad Republic: America's Entrepreneurial Edge and Why it Matters to All of Us,” takes a deep dive into the history of entrepreneurship in the United States. They focus on the political, legal, and cultural factors that have fueled this “creative destruction” for over 200 years, driving the country forward.

The book explores what makes America unique in this regard. They argue that America's democratic system allows new businesses to challenge existing ones in a way unseen elsewhere. This constant competition keeps big companies on their toes and encourages innovation. The book also examines the legal framework that protects property rights and fair competition, fostering investment and new ideas.

While celebrating America's history of entrepreneurship, Wolk and Landry don't shy away from current challenges. They discuss the rise of big tech companies, issues of inequality and inclusion, and the growing focus on sustainability. They compare the American model to other approaches, like the consensus-oriented system in Europe and the authoritarian model of China.

Launchpad Republic offers readers:

  • Insights into how America's political, legal and cultural history helped make the country the most dynamic economy in the world since inception
  • A framework for understanding how the country's balanced and limited government, decentralized financial and corporate system, and responsiveness to consumers all served to enable innovation and improved standard of living while avoiding many of the pitfalls of cronyism and protectionism
  • Fascinating comparisons between the United States and other countries, both historical and contemporary, that provide important context to many of today's critical issues

A book that covers important topics in an easy to read style, Launchpad Republic belongs in the library of every policy wonk, capitalist, entrepreneur, founder, business leader, amateur historian, and technologist with an interest in how America's relentless entrepreneurial spirit has influenced―and will influence―its destiny.

  1. Thank you for your article. Whilst I think creativity still exists today in America, I find that competition is somewhat lacking, insofaras, everyone gets a medal just for competing. American schools have become so focussed on being PC – they forget that competition is actually a good thing. Obviously, this is a sweeping statement and I’m sure not true for every school, but I just feel we’re moving away from the model where true talent is distinguished.
