My first job out of college was writing computer based training programs. This wasn't an easy job and in fact, I failed miserably at it. However what I did discover is that I was pretty good at writing. All of the groups came to me to rewrite their text to make it sound better for the students who would be taking the training programs. I was at this job for over a year before I left to take a position with a lot more writing and something perfect fit to my skillset.
I have shared this story with my kids because I want them to understand that failure is a part of life. It is what you do after you fail, that really determines who you are as a person. We teach our children that it is ok to fail. That failure means learning and that you also learn a lot about yourself when you fail. Failure is not an easy thing. Failure also provides teaching opportunity and an amazing way to learn how to do things even better the next time around.
