PRO TIP: the pattern fabrics worked best for this project because they hide the “flaws” such as the bumps and any hot glue that may show through if you put it on too thick.
- Print the template in Adobe Acrobat and make sure you uncheck the box that says Fit to Page or Scale to Fit. After printed, cut the two pieces out and tape them together in the center lines. The final piece should measure about 14″ x 4.5″
- This may be the hardest step! Use a utility knife to cut an x in the bottom of the yogurt container. These containers are thicker than you may think! The easiest way to cut into the container is to use firm strokes and go over the cut several times until you actually cut through the plastic. If you use too much pressure, you may cause the entire bottom of the container to break. Be patient, this is the most time consuming step!
- You want your X about the size of the X in a lid that a straw pokes through.
- Paint your yogurt containers with acrylic paint. Set aside to dry. 2-3 coats may be necessary.
- Use a pencil to trace the template onto the wrong side of your fabric. Cut out the fabric with scissors. You need 8 pieces per ornament.
- To attach the fabric to the ornament, start by gluing one end to the center of the ball with hot glue. Pull the fabric firmly but not too forcefully to the bottom of the ball and affix it with hot glue.
- You'll need to cut the edges of the fabric that “bubble up” and away from the ball. Once cut, (see image) glue the ends onto the ball, keeping the fabric as smooth as possible and then glue the center portion onto the ball.
- Add your next piece of fabric. Make sure it overlaps the existing piece about 1″. Repeat the process of attaching the top and bottom with hot glue and then cutting the fabric on the sides and gluing them down. Continue until the entire ball is covered.
- Use a pen cap or blunt end of the scissors to poke through your yogurt container. The hole may be painted shut!
- Cut a 6″ piece of red sheer ribbon and fold it in half. Shove the ribbon into the bottom of the yogurt container with the pen cap. Gently pull through the other side and attach with hot glue so the ribbon does not come out.
- Add hot glue to the rim of the yogurt container and attach to one end of the ball.
- Repeat until all ornaments are completed.
- Add mini lights and wide ribbon to your garland. Hang your garland and hang your ornaments on the garland.
