The key element is the crumble topping, made with flour, butter, sugar, and sometimes oats. This creates a delightful textural contrast against the soft fruit filling. While strawberries are a popular choice, crumbles can be made with various fruits like apple, rhubarb, blueberry, or even savory fillings like meat and vegetables. Crumbles are typically served warm with a dollop of cream, custard, or ice cream, adding another layer of flavor and richness.

Breakdown of the Key Aspects of the Strawberry Crumble

Ingredients

  • Filling: Fresh strawberries, sometimes mixed with sugar, spices (like cinnamon or nutmeg), and other fruits (like rhubarb).
  • Topping: Flour, butter, sugar, and often oats, creating a crumbly texture.

Preparation

  1. The fruit filling is baked briefly to soften and release its juices.
  2. The crumbly topping is sprinkled over the filling and baked until golden brown.
  3. The finished crumble is typically served warm with custard, cream, or ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 piece of thawed puff pastry that will fit your favorite tart pan, we used a long pan that was about 12 inches by 3.5 inches.
  • 3-4 cups fresh strawberries that are washed and dried (you could optionally mix the cut berries with 2 tablespoons of flour to help absorb some of the liquid, we typically skip this step and just let it sit a little longer before eating so the liquid thickens on its own).
  • Crumble topping, makes a larger amount than you may need for the actual strawberry tart but who doesn’t love extra crumble?!
  • ½ cup (1 stick) soft unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup oats

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Use a fork or pastry tool to combine the crumble topping ingredients, and mix until you have even clumps and clusters of the crumble. Transfer to a baking sheet and cook for about 15 to 17 minutes or until the pieces are golden brown but still soft.
  3. While that is baking press pastry dough into the tart pan and fill with the cut strawberries. Bake this for about 20 minutes or until you can see that the layers of puff pastry have baked through and are golden brown.
  4. You could bake the entire tart with the crumble on top but the weight might be too much for the pastry, not allowing it to bake through under the berries.
  5. Allow to cool for 15 to 20 minutes before cutting and serving.

The History of the Crumble

  • The exact origin of the crumble is debated, but it's believed to have emerged in Britain sometime in the 19th century.
  • Some attribute its rise to the need for resourceful desserts during WWII rationing. Pastry ingredients were scarce, making the simpler crumble topping an attractive alternative.
  • Others suggest it evolved from traditional British puddings or fruit pies, with a simpler topping replacing the elaborate crusts.
  • Regardless of its exact origin, the crumble became a quintessentially British dessert, cherished for its ease of preparation, versatility, and comforting flavors.
  • Today, crumbles are enjoyed worldwide, with variations incorporating local fruits and ingredients.

Possible influences

  • Cobblers: Similar rustic desserts with fruit fillings and a biscuit-like topping.
  • Pies and tarts: Crumbles might have been seen as a more economical way to enjoy fruit desserts without the full pastry crust.
  • Streusel: A crumbly topping used in various European pastries, potentially influencing the crumble's development.

Strawberry Crumble in Particular

  • While any crumble can be special, the vibrant color and sweet-tart flavor of strawberries make them a particularly popular filling.
  • It's a perfect way to use up ripe, seasonal strawberries, creating a delicious and satisfying dessert.
  • The crumble topping adds a comforting warmth and textural contrast, making each bite delightful.

Global Variations

  • Apple crumble: A classic British version, often served with custard.
  • Rhubarb crumble: Another popular choice, especially in spring when rhubarb is in season.
  • Savory crumbles: Variations using meat, vegetables, or cheese fillings exist in different regions.
  • American “crisp”: Similar to crumble but often uses rolled oats more prominently in the topping.
