History of Nutella

The history of Nutella is a story of innovation and adaptation, with roots in a place famous for hazelnuts. Here's a timeline of its key events:

  • 1946: Pietro Ferrero, an Italian baker from Alba, Italy (a region known for hazelnut production), invents a solution to wartime chocolate shortages and creates “Gianduja,” a paste made from hazelnuts, cocoa, and sugar. This early version of Nutella was sold in solid blocks like a loaf.
  • 1951: The recipe evolves into “Supercrema gianduja,” a creamier, spreadable version. The Ferrero company introduced a creamier, spreadable version of the original paste called Supercrema gianduja.
  • 1963: Michele Ferrero, Pietro's son, takes the helm and revamps Supercrema gianduja for a wider European market. He refines the recipe and renames it “Nutella.”
  • April 20, 1964: The first jar of Nutella rolls off the production line in Alba. It's an immediate success and continues to be a beloved breakfast and snack spread around the world.

If you could just have more step by step pictures it would definitely help the amateur bakers. I’m in the process of making them now and am a little frustrated because I’m not sure of the consistency is correct. I would have liked to have a picture from you of it. It’s now in the oven and I’m hoping they turn out well! I did absolutely love that it was a two ingredient recipe. I love recipes with minimal ingredients.
