All-Women Team SCA Competing Around the World

The Story of the All-Women Team SCA

All-Women Team SCA

Have you heard of Team SCA?

Team SCA shattered a glass ceiling in the world of ocean racing. This all-female team wasn't just competing, they were blazing a trail. For nine grueling months, they battled the elements and fierce competition in some of the world's toughest ocean races. SCA, their sponsor (you can learn more about them below), announced their mission in 2012: to get women back in the Volvo Ocean Race, the sport's most prestigious event, after a 12-year absence. Team SCA wasn't built overnight. Over 250 women from around the globe applied, and the final crew of 15 included solo sailors, record-breakers, and Olympians. Their shared goal? To inspire a new generation of female sailors and prove that women belong on the high seas, not just as spectators, but as equals on the racing circuit.

On the 11th June 2015 the culmination of over two years of extremely hard work and perseverance paid off for Team SCA, as they crossed the finish line in Lorient, France to take their first leg win of the Volvo Ocean Race. It was a remarkable and historic moment for women as it was first time in 25 years that an all-female team has taken line honors in this, the most extreme of offshore sailing races.
