5 ways to jump start holiday shopping
I tend to be someone who shops all year round. However, I do a lot of major shopping between September and December with the most being in September, then October, November, December. My goal is the earlier the better and the closer we get to the holidays, the more I shop online.
Shopping early really has its advantages. According to a recent report in USA Today, one million U.S. consumers finish their holiday shopping by September. That's not me because I still need to shop so I am sharing these 5 ways to jump start holiday shopping.
1. Plan & strategize before you go.
What stores are on your list? How long will you be out? Who are your shopping for? What's your budget? I keep a notepad with me at all times so I can write down things throughout the year. Everything that I write goes into the notes on my phone because it's always with me. I make notes like:
- sizes of all family members
- favorite colors and other faves of each person
- items that my family has mentioned wanting or talked about
- amount spent on each person
Having detailed notes like this means it is so easy when it comes time to shop in-store. I can take my lists, refer to them and take my time shopping.
2. What's in store? Grab a circular or two.
Find recent store circulars to plan your trip. Find them for every store you want to shop. I sometimes use sticky notes to designate which items I like and for who. Sears shared this circular to provide more information and jump start your shopping.
3. Find coupons.
Nothing is more motivating to me than searching out coupons to save me money while I am shopping in-store. Typically I like the kind that I can keep on my phone but not all stores work that way. Some require you to print them on the printer so I print, clip and put in my small notebook that I keep with me.
4. Dress properly. Pack essentials to take along.
A big part of your shopping success is determined by the stamina you have while in-store. I keep a protein bar in my purse (large tote) and a bottle of water with me at all times. I stay hydrated and snack if I need to. I dress in yoga pants, loose fitting tee and tennis shoes that can easily slip on and off in case I want to try something on. Of course I shop for myself as well!

I haven’t thought about Christmas shopping yet. I don’t know what we are going to do for my kids yet. I try to stick to one thing they want, a need, and something to read.
